Looking at the releases for october, there isn't really any "oh boy must-have day 1" titles.

Either I have no interest or I will at least check out reviews, streams and impressions. Those are Jett, Super Monkey Ball, Moonglow Bay, Metroid Dread, Back 4 Blood, Despot's Game, Tandem, BF2042, House of Ashes, Solar Ash, Guardians of the Galaxi, AOE4, Fatal Frame, Riders Republic.

There is very little chance Im getting any on those on day, maybe the week of release, but I have enough interest to at least check out critic reviews, Steam reviews and streams for them. House of Ashes can be crossed out really, Im interested, but I have yet to play the other games in the series.

Will surely also be some new indie games popping out of nowhere that I really wanna get.

If it includes some of the expansions for the game that have released up till now, it'd be massive.
they announced some expansion alongside this new trailer
A large-scale expansion downloadable content, Dragon Quest X: The Sleeping Hero and the Guided Allies Offline, featuring the same size story as that of the main game, will follow in spring 2022.
no iidea how that changes the outlook and possibiity of it ever getting english support

So the POSTAL: Brain Damaged demo is...kinda incredible?

It's a boomer-shooter spinoff and boy howdy does it deliver.

Movement speed & camera feel liquid smooth at 120fps. Reminds me a lot of Dusk, maybe a tad slower but not by much. But it has that "just right" kinda vibe regarding locomotion. Shooting feels great. Though I wish there were a difficulty select as it felt a little easy (however you can get overwhelmed quickly if you're not playing smart).

Demo is one level and it's HUGE. Took me a bit under 2 hours, but I'm also an "uncover every secret" kind of player so I generally move more slowly through a level.

The setting is dreamscape suburbia so you get this Burtonesque landscape with structures at odd angles. The music is reminiscent of Sims 1, adding to the odd, surreal vibe. Though it does kick into modern Doom metal when the action picks up. Speaking of which, weapons have a wacky flair. You pistol has an alt that will tag three targets before you pop it off (this can also be directed to one baddie). And much like Eternal, your double-barrel has a hook shot that can both pull you to enemies or use on floating rings for air traversal.

Overall I was quite surprised. Sports a really creative look and feels great in action.

100% buying.

I think I stopped after the 2nd episode on LiS 2 and I've played hte first one like 3 times also played before the storm.

Not sure what it was with LiS 2 but it didn't really grab me. Also why I'm waiting for a sale on the latest release.

LIS True Colors is my favorite in the series. It would have been better if they had an extra hour or two between Chapters 2 and 3 to develop the cast’s relationships some more, and the epilogue felt a bit fast but overall I loved it.

As much as I liked the other games the dialogue was pure cringe half the time. True Colors really benefits from having an adult cast instead of the original games where you can really tell the dialogue is an adult trying to capture what teenagers talk like, It was super hard for me to recommend those games as much as I loved them because god some scenes are just embarrassing to sit through.

Is no one else playing Unsighted?

This little gem released a few days ago, I had it on my Wishlist since the last Steam Next Fest. I only played 5ish hours today, but I am still enjoying the same things I loved in the Demo: the Pixel Art presentation is gorgeous, the story makes me curious for more and the characters are great. Controls are a bit iffy for the ranged weapons, but tight for the melee ones. Please check this game out, if you like 2D Zeldas or newer games in this genre like Hyperlight Drifter or CrossCode.
I really wanted to play it but I'm fucking broke so I'm gonna have to wait a couple months lol

Kena doesn't mess around. Had a boss fight that felt legit out of Dark Souls.
The game is gorgeous but it needs some optimization to improve performance.

I'm late but thanks for the thread lashman! Glad to see you back

So what's everyones GOTY thus far? For me Psychonauts 2 with RE Village as a close second.
Possibly Chicory. I have a hard time playing games the year they release so my pool of contenders is always very short.

Continuing on my first run of Dark Souls 2 and I think I might be near the end...
You're about 80% done, depending on much optional stuff you want to do before the end. I would recommend going though the dlcs, if you haven't done so, because they are all excellent.

I think Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous may be my goty even though it still has bugs, other games that will likely appear on my list:

Mail Mole
R-Type Final 2
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Garden Story
Psychonauts 2
Disco Elysium: Final Cut*
Olija

Downunder.
Not sure I'd count it as being released in 2021, the official release on PC will not happen until next year.
I wrote down Zero as my MC GOTY 2020 because even though it's not an official release, the voting eligibility criteria set by Wok is broad enough to include it.

If the criteria remain the same, my GOTY 2021 is also a lock. And perhaps for 2022 as well, if NISA's schedule holds. :flare_lmao:

My GOTY is definitely Mass Effect Legendary followed by Nioh2 thus far.

Currently playing FF1 and its very good but I don't think it would make my top 2 for the year.

Still need to play more new releases before the end of the year like Castlevania Advance, Psychonauts 2 etc.

Also New World hitting 913k concurrent is crazy. FF14 and ESO average around 20-30k daily and they are considered successful mmos. Amazon must be very happy with doing #s that big.

Speaking of Hitman; controversial opinion

I do enjoy the new Hitman games but they’re too complex for their own good and I’d rather play Blood Money tbh

It either holds your hand too much via the hint system, or else you are fumbling around in massive levels wondering what to do.
The second is certainly preferable to the first to me but if you want to do the challenges and level up and get the unlocks? Then fugget about it, it’s hand holding time.

I’ll take my last meal before my execution now thanks
there's a restricted freedom of assassination which they try to mask with their big and open maps, but that goes for all games in a sense
i want to imagine a game where there's minimum restrictions, it just allows for more choices for the player and in a sense, helps with immersion

While I am not downplaying those figures, as they are great numbers, It’s a bit of a difficult comparison to make. Final Fantasy XIV, as I understand it, only has a small part of its user base on steam. The subscribers on Square Enix own launcher far out way the steam users.

not so sure about ESO though. Not sure why anyone would choose the Beth launcher.

again, not downplaying the numbers. Competition is always a good thing to have and I will probably have a look next year when I am done with the Endwalker content.

I mean I doubt the nonSteam or Playstation version of FF14 is doing numbers anywhere near 900k. Especially with the game requiring subscription and playing mmorpgs must not be too fun on console. Its probably more than Steam but I doubt its that much more.

900k peak for a 40$ game is impressive. Outside of WoW I can't see any other mmorpg hitting that type of number over the past 2 decades.

With both Cyberpunk and New World doing these ridiculous release Steam numbers....I am now on board Elden Ring hitting a million concurrent during launch week. Its happening :evilblob:

As I said I am really not trying to downplay the figures for New World. It is great that there is a new MMO.

I really do think you are under estimating the player population of FFXIV at the moment, especially on PlayStation. But there is no way of knowing for certain. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how it plays out come the end of November.

edit; changed downplaying to underestimating. It made it sound like you had some sort of agenda, which was the furthest thing from my mind.

If you're wondering why the it's because there's a spiritual successor to Captain Blood in development. Free on Windows and mobile.

Great to see New World doing huge numbers, hopefully they can sort the queues i've seen people grumbling about but hey, it's an MMO it's supposed to have people moaning about queues! heh.
I play FFXIV from the Square Launcher and Account not Steam and i think the majority of the playerbase is the same, or it was a year or so ago when i last logged in. It'll be interesting to see what numbers New World can sustain over the next few months but it's had a successful launch for sure numbers-wise at least and it should be able to keep a sustainable amount of those player to keep it viable. Now the next hurdles begin, polishing it, getting new content out there and the always contentious cycle of nerfs and buffs.

ESO isn't on Beth launcher, it has its own launcher and account system.
Why would people choose it: Frequent connection issues on the steam version (at least when I was getting into it) and cheaper keys and upgrades.
Ahh, cool. Didn’t realise that. It’s another one of those ones I plan to try at some point.

Why didn't you like it compared to the other ones?
i don't know ... it just didn't really grab me ... maybe because the "power" was kinda boring, and only actually useful in like 3 situations throughout the entire game .... and that "rpg" episode was just awful (and incredibly boring) ... oh, and the ending (well, right before the ending) felt like it was changed at the very last second during production, and a total cop out (actual spoiler --> also - 3 people from the same family somehow ending up in the same small town in the middle of nowhere ... nah, not buying that, sorry) ... also the setting felt kinda "cramped" ... the first game had a bunch of different locations, even if it all took place in a small town ... but in this one - it feels like it's just that one street and park throughout the entire game, and you don't really go anywhere else ... i know that's not entirely true, because there's the mine, hospital, and stuff ... but it certainly feels like 80% of the game takes place on (and around) this one street

I finished Industria, its a really beautiful eurojank fps, full of charm, with a solid shooting and world building. Its also the greatest praise to what half life did for the genre that someone has ever been developed, don't sleep on it.

Also welcome back lashman, its really good to see you around again! You rock mate

(actual spoiler --> also - 3 people from the same family somehow ending up in the same small town in the middle of nowhere ... nah, not buying that, sorry) ...
I'm pretty sure Gabe went to Haven looking for signs of his father, and Alex went to Haven to stay with Gabe... So it's not that outlandish. 😜 It just felt that way because Gabe doesn't mention the whole father thing to Alex, at all.

I do agree with your other criticisms though. The setting felt small, and the power was used inconsistently. I really enjoyed how it worked when they fully embraced the powers and let it seem to affect the world around it though(ie: the florist's Alzheimer's making the world foggy and the numbers/letters warp, the ground falling away when Ryan had his moment, Gabe's GF's scene with the art pieces, etc...).
