Happy New Year! The team is back from the holiday and firing on all cylinders - we’ve got a few updates for you today.

First and foremost, we’re on track to ship Steam Deck on time. Global pandemic, supply issues, and shipping issues notwithstanding, it looks like we'll be able to start getting these out the door by the end of February. You can view your estimated reservation availability window here, in case you've forgotten.

In parallel, work and testing for the Steam Deck Verified program has been underway. You’ll soon be able to see Deck Verified status for a growing set of Steam games. We’re checking four major categories: input, seamlessness, display, and system support. You can learn more about the program here.

It’s also important that we give developers the ability to test their games in order to get that nice green Verified check, so we’ve been sending developer kits out in quantity. We've been approving another wave of dev kits, and hundreds have been shipped out in the last month (and we're continuing to approve and send out even more). Thanks for your patience devs!

But what good are words when we have photos? Our production build is ramping up, and we have some of the first units in-house to test and evaluate (they're looking great).
Deck on track!

I am Q2 despite being somewhere around 30k in queue.

I am assuming Valve is targeting an achievable amount each month for each region, like 10k per month for NA which would put me around April or May. I just consider myself lucky I am even in a region that it is orderable, though I hope for a surprise and I receive mine earlier (maybe even around my birthday at the end of March :evilblob:)

I am assuming there will be a fairly low rate of cancellations with these first few orders since even folks on the fence may see it as something they could sell.

Cancellation rate could be high too, it's been around 9 months when these start shipping, situations can have changed, a lot of time to think if you really need, reselling is effort, etc.

I guess it depends on the kind of people who ordered it. In principle, given the limited number of devices and the huge demand world wide, there's huge potential to selling it at even twice its price.

so late Feb and not early :(
Mine used to be December, now says Q1. Will have to see if it'll be February or March...
On that note, I wonder if it specifies the month for anyone, or if it states Q1 across the board.

Either way – good to hear theyre on track!

luckily i already got mine ready .... i guess it helps i accidentally ordered it on wrong steam account :-D so the chance of spending it out during the sale was none :face-with-tears-of-joy:
I had my preorder money all saved up ... but the sale decreased it a bit. Ah well.

Running locally you mean? My only interests are how games run locally (as I already stream to my devices even outside of LAN with hella good quality, [Hidden content])
Of course is running locally, it is not cloud or anything. :cat-heart-blob:

My biggest worry is that I won't be able to save enough for when its time to pay, I can imagine its same more people than me.

I am "After Q2 2022" because I'm trying to get the $649 one.

This is what I'm struggling with -- I think I would use it, but the price is really high (I reserved the middle one). That money would buy a LOT of games. And I already have a Switch for taking on trips, etc. And I'd probably want to be able to dock it, which is more expense. Anyway, there's still time enough to decide, since I'm in not in the first batch.

I wonder how well the game look on the deck when run on lower res? Something I noticed with playing on my MacBook Pro was that running games on much lower res still tended to look good. I assume because it was on a smaller screen.

Because seeing how well God of War seems to run I am hoping that getting it to run at 60 and still looking good on the deck would be a dream!

Small screens definitely help in masking graphical flaws or low settings, I used to have an 11-inch netbook and games looked pretty good even on low settings. Another advantage for us older gentlemen is poor eyesight! Our eyes can provide very good AA if the image is far enough or near enough :nerd-face:

Yea switch still looks mostly okay in portable mode, it's how I play with the kickstand using a controller, while it looks like complete ass on even just a small 1080p monitor, lol

I don't think we will go back and implement 16:10 support in the ToCS games. Those have a ton of interface elements which might break, so it's not a trivial matter.

You can expect most of our future releases to support arbitrary aspect ratios though.

But I wanted to start with Persona 4 Golden
:negative-blob:
Here I'm wondering what's exactly the problem with this one as we have seen people playing it through proton but on PC.

Looking through the Proton github, it seems like it has video issues, and crashing issues in cutscenes. What I can say is that neither are caused by DXVK, since I actually ran it through that on Windows.

Everything would be so much easier if (primarily Japanese) developers stopped using the whole Windows machinery for playing video files. The funny part is I feel like it's even easier for Windows development, or at least debugging, since you don't need to care about the potential differences in the setup of components you don't control breaking your game for some players.

I assume the reason some Japanese developers stick to the Windows stuff despite its (IMHO) terrible API and implementation is that they are used to consoles where you always play movies using the console APIs, and shipping your own codec doesn't even cross their mind.

Yeah judging from ProtonDb people are playing it via Proton-GE (Glorious Eggroll, a forked version that implements video fixes)
The video codec thing is really annoying indeed. Something that could be averted so easily, one would think. Hopefully the release of Steam Deck will lead to a change. But meanwhile, Wine 7 was released and among the release notes was better implementation of Windows Media stuff, so maybe that will have an impact on Proton soon, as well?
