New week, new thread! What are you playing?

I am enjoying Assassin's Creed Origins a lot. In my honest opinion, this is fantastic. Very, very beautiful artstyle and graphics. I have a strange curiousity towards Egypt since I watched the first Mummy movie when I was young. Egypt is so foreign and mysterious in my eyes and their culture is truly unique. ACO captures the allure of the country and the environment perfectly. I particularly love all the illusion happening during desert exploration. Ubisoft surely added interesting elements to this vast open space.

Gameplay is familiar yet new to me I enjoy almost every aspect of it, except the extreme spongy and ruthless high level enemy in some camps. I also love how brutal Bayek is. On one hand, he is a humble and honest man with integrity, on the other hand, when facing enemies he becomes the rawest manifest of brutality. Sometimes I purposely stir up open conflict in order to enjoy his combat animations. Although my time with ACO is limited, he is quickly becoming my favotite protagonist in the series.

Kinda dropped Heaven Burns Red. I like the story, but I do not like the gameplay at all and had some bad gacha luck, so I'm prioritizing reading through the Girls' Frontline story since the sequel drops on the 3rd. Maybe I'll get back to HBR once I have some room.

Other than that, Genshin dropped a bunch of new areas, so I've also been doing that. Good stuff as usual.

Kick Bastards: this game is indie as hell. The UI is bad, the tutorials are bad, the story physically harms me. There's a paucity of sound effects. The music is so generic, I forgot it had any. I had to launch the game just now to check. I don't use the word cringe, but that's precisely what the dialogue is. It seems that the game plays poorly as well.

BUT! But, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but. I thought there must be something I was missing. I "beat" the very short story mode in 20 minutes. While I stared in disbelief, I found myself spawned unannounced into an advanced tutorial level. Up until that point, I was very down on the game, thinking I would refund it. Suddenly, this game has sauce.

I began to replay the story levels. I started applying ideas the advanced tutorial gave me with a new goal of surpassing the "Dev Times" (the medal above Platinum, which is the highest standard grade). I started to see shortcuts that must be taken to hit those "Dev Times", but how do you execute on them? I started to practice techniques the tutorials gave me or hinted at. The game has bunny hopping, but it's easier than old school bunny hopping so you don't have to destroy your hands to do it. But for the love of ergonomics, move the crouch button off of CTRL or C and onto a mouse button! It will save your hands.

But this does not have broad appeal. Many people don't even like easy 1st person platforming. This is for weirdos like me who love speedrunning 1st person platforming... on mouse and keyboard. This is like a more hardcore Neon White.

This game is for sickos like me who love micro-speedrunning 1st person parkour platforming filth. If you adored Neon White, consider trying this. But it's not nearly as accessible as NW, and it makes a horrendous first impression. But oooow, when you vault a ledge and catapult yourself across a lake with a 180-degree flick back-kick, 180 back around and land in a buttery smooth sequence of bunny hops, the angels sing. This game requires the speed and precision of mouse and keyboard to play it as intended in my opinion.

I've beaten the first 5 stages' "Dev Times" now, and it took several hours. But I loved it; I love this. It's a great podcast game. I began thinking I would refund this trash, but now it might end up a surprise entry into my 2024 Top 5. And I do not recommend it. It has zero broad appeal. It was made for my addled mind specifically.

Flintlock Siege of Dawn: Having a pretty good time with this. Visually appealing, and a pretty sold action/adventure that’s not a souls like. That alone is pretty refreshing.

It’s also the first time since Tomb Raider on PS1, where I’ve spent time trying to figure out how to get to areas. I kind of like that.
