We are approaching year's end, do you have any gaming plan for the upcoming year?
I approve your Witcher plan, although keep in mind that first book (Last Wish) is slightly weaker than the next ones and the same applies to the games. Although there are people who disagree with that of course. And even if you do not enjoy Witcher 1 (I would recommend playing it in OTS mode instead of isometric btw), give TW2 and TW3 a try since they are both huge step forward in presentation and production values.

As for my gaming Christmas + new year plan:

1) Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which from first few hours seems to be Dishonored with Indy - and I am really enjoying it

2) The Invincible, followed by reading the book

3) Stasis Bone Totem, which I read some very rave reviews for, so I want to at least try it when I got it for free (Prime)

4) Aliens: Dark Descent (gamepass) - also read some good stuff about, and I am hyped for Alien universe again after Romulus

5) Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 - gonna take a week or two off for this one, it will be big, in all senses of the word

After that, I'll see what strikes my fancy. I might get FF16 or GoW Ragnarok.

Hey Capcom you can revive Breath of Fire any time you'd like. Heck a collection would be fine with me right now.

We are approaching year's end, do you have any gaming plan for the upcoming year? Here are my two main objectives:

1. Dive into the Witcher series. My only experience with the IP was a few Netflix episodes (which were pretty bad). After watching the Witcher 4 trailer, I did research and made a trip to the library and grabbed the first two books. I am going to slowly read through the books and play through the games (if I enjoy the journey, of course).

2. Continue my adventure in Girls' Frontline universe. GFL2 at the moment is very enjoyable, but the 8-year accumulation of GFL1 story as well as its multiple spinoff was a world waiting for exploration and truly demands time investment. Have already started reading through them since a few months ago.

They should help me reduce the spending on new games, too. I can just borrow the books from library and buy Witcher 3 (which is dirt cheap on sale. Already own 1 and 2), and the story playthroughs of GFL1 are on YouTube. Cheap ass gamer wins. :face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-winking-eye:

Edit: lashman :blobyesanime:
1) Play Monster Hunter Wilds
2) Play GTA 6 (it if actually releases next year)
3) Play ¯\(ツ)/¯ in between

Gonna try to finish Metaphor and Midnight Suns before Rebirth comes out. Then it'll be all about FF7 for a few months. After that I'm not sure. I do intend to replay Nier Automata at some point. Whatever games I pick up will depend on the deals that happen.

Honestly at this point I can probably fill most of my gaming time just bouncing between gacha updates.
I do want to catch up with the Kingdom Hearts series and finish Persona 5 though. Beyond that I dunno yet, though there are still a couple games I definitely want to play eventually (Armored Core, Elden Ring DLC, Yakuza 5-8, Monster Hunter Wilds,...)

New PC. This one is over 8yo and deserved it's rest.
Depending on what nvidia and amd show next month I'll decide what gpu I get. Can't say I'm too excited to switch to amd but if the rumours are true I'm guessing nvidia's not interested in keeping people like me as customers. We'll see.

Getting closer to the end on Metaphor now. Definitely a fantastic game. Better than P5 because it isn't full of high school kids, but the music isn't hitting as hard for me outside of a couple tracks which are indeed bangers.

All these anime games are becoming kind of a blur for me because of how similar they look. Honkay Star Rail, Whutering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero... Is any of this stuff worth checking out? They do look pretty cool.

All these announcements got me thinking again about how everyone seems to take everything for granted.
When I started gaming I had to wait 20 minutes for cassettes to load games that were made of a handful of pixels.
Now we have games and tech that are beyond our wildest dreams and most of the discourse surrounding gaming is just people bitching about the most ridiculous things.
Where does this entitlement come from? Especially when it's from people that live of off rage bait and have never done anything productive in their entire lives?
I have never engaged with this stuff, but the fact that on the heels of the best batch of announcements I've ever seen the toxicity is higher than ever just blows my mind.

Already read the striga story in Last Wish. Also watched the cinematic of Witcher 1 and I thought both are great. Thanks for the advice. Excited to dive in deeper.

I am more into sci-fi / tacticool aesthetics so these are what I like.

Girls Frontline 2. Strategy game with simplified XCOM mechanics. It has a PC client and you can jump in right now.
The coom element is completely optional and does not bleed into the main story / event content. It is the sugar coat of a depressing universe. (Edit: actually the current event has a Nikke-like gallery shooting game. Totally forgot about it.
The story so far is pretty good, imo.

Arknight Endfield. Coming soon in 2025. I don't know much about Arknight but it looks fantastic. Seems like action-based? I may try it out if impressions from the upcoming beta are good.

I just ignore the bitching and play whatever I want. When Intergalactic hits PC I will definitely play it.

Jan: Deciding between FFVII: Rebirth or Dynasty Warriors: Origins or both?
Feb: KCD2 and MH: Wilds for sure. Sorry Yakuza but Feb is just too stacked.
Mar: Split Fiction.

Probably stick to only playing one gacha which would be GFL2.

Maybe try hit the backlog somewhere inbetween new releases, co-oping games with mates and ongoing games (PoE2, Dota 2, Helldivers 2).

All these anime games are becoming kind of a blur for me because of how similar they look. Honkay Star Rail, Whutering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero... Is any of this stuff worth checking out? They do look pretty cool.
I think it's worth checking all of them out and probably sticking with one or two that you really like. HSR is similar to Trails so JRPG, WW is like BotW with DMC-ish combat and ZZZ just stages with DMC-ish combat. Narrative wise I can't really tell you much on this except from what I've seen HSR is probably one of the best (a little bias here since I believe the scenario writer for some of the HSR content did one of my favourite storylines in Honkai Impact 3rd). With music a lot of gachas do good work in this area and I usually end up listening to a few tracks on repeat.

I'd say come join us in GFL2 for some xcom-lite since it's the new one that's come out and quite a few of us are currently playing it (we have a thread!). But as a newbie recommendation I'd stick with any Hoyoverse games (HSR, ZZZ, GI) since they're the ones setting the standard for a high production value gacha game.

RIP Grumz and Stella Blade. e.i. the dev games are normal people but grifters really took it far.

From what people have said the game itself isn't bad but yeah. "Cultural beacon"

Anyway as much as I like to make fun of Grumz he is still a human and I do wonder what it would be like if you bumped into him in person.

I watched a friend stream:

For the first time, and it was still a blast. That game is absolutely hilarious, and that was my recommendation after we played:

And what a riot that was.
Those games make me think that we can still do innovative things with videogames, and doing so by exploiting the media as it should be, as a completely unique way to appreciate comedy.
I appreciate those really weird and fun experiences way more than Souls-like 254489, turn based JRPG 557961 or Mario-with-references.

For all the talks of videogame being "art", it sure as hell isn't the AAA popcorn productions by devs that discovered Romero's movies in their 40s that make it. And I'm always surprised how the videogame industry is so insular, I guess that's the real divide with the modern generation that plays popular games, they do other things that play games and learn more than just what videogame corpos allow them to see...

PlatinumGames might be dying with several departures being noticed:

Huh, that dude is moving to Helsinki. Remedy and Housemarque are the obvious options I suppose, Housemarque seems more likely based solely on the fact that Sony owns them.
I suppose smaller devs also exist, but that doesn't seem likely.

I don't make too many gaming plans these days beyond just playing some stuff. I have a list of games on my spreadsheet that I occasionally look at and chip away, and I still technically have a "next" category on Steam, but considering some games have been on that list and in that category for years, I guess plans change sometimes. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

The Witcher 4 made me think about finally playing through the W3 DLC's, never touched those.
I'll probably continue Yakuza series with Kiwami 1 at some point.
I should also play the Elden Ring Erdtree DLC.
Other things of note that have been on my mind lately are Prey, Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider.
Watch Dogs 2
and Fenyx Rising I actually already have installed but I've been pushing them back for a while, but with the recent addition of Steam cheevos to some older AC games, maybe they'll add them to those too and they might jump forwards in my mind.
Also maybe Dragon's Dogma. Also kind of maybe thinking about checking out the Tex Murphy series.

Alright Forza 4 bought, got the ultimate for the lego! now I have a very meagre winter sale budget.
It’s why I bought and nearly insta refunded it. I have fond memories of FH4, but won’t realistically play it again, fuck this FOMO, let the past be the past.
Obviously don’t apply if you actually want to play it again.

Plans? Like finish tons of games i started this year and then stopped because I was waiting to be patched? XD

Or repeating that mistake of buying new releases then stop playing them until they are patched?

Those are only 2 plans on my mind XD

I plan to start saving to upgrade my PC, or at least, my GPU, which is a 1070ti. I built this PC in 2018 or 2019. Even when I built it, I planned on upgrading my GPU within 1 to 2 years, then the pandemic and crypto pricing threw everything out of wack. Now I hope the proposed tariffs don't throw yet another wrench into everything, although the tariffs are the least of my upcoming concerns. 🥴

Otherwise I do want to start carving out time to actually play games again, I have for obvious reasons not playing much this year, though no shortage of buying games...but hope to actually play more.

We are approaching year's end, do you have any gaming plan for the upcoming year? Here are my two main objectives:
I'm definitely going to be all over FFVII Rebirth and Spider Man 2 (Just installed Miles Morales to finally finish it along with FFVII's Remake Yuffie's DLC in preparation to both releases). After TGA Rebirth PC confirmation I finally started watching some reviews about it and I'm sure I'm going to love it, I absolutely adored Remake.

I'm going to dig into my backlog the rest of the year. FFXVI, Cyberpunk, and Lies of P are really up there among the games I want to finish next year.

As a side note, I totally wasn't expecting such a fast turnaround for Rebirth to come to Steam, seeing how we had to wait 2 whole ass years to get Remake on Steam. It was faster than FFXVI even though that game's PC port was teased since before the game even came out on PS5 lol.

Hey Capcom you can revive Breath of Fire any time you'd like. Heck a collection would be fine with me right now.
Last year was the 30th anniversary of the series and I will reset Capcom forever for not giving me a 1~4 collection in HD.

JK I won't after Okami announcement Capcom can step on me freely

Oh yeah my next year plan post is all about playing old stuff.

I don't typically pay too much attention to release dates so I have no idea what's coming out next year, other than Silksong ( :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes: ).
Plus I probably don't have too much extra to spend on games in 2025 either, so it's going to be a lot of backlog clearing by default. I'll probably buy a few new indie games here and there, likely not too many new AAA's. We'll see.

Maybe I'll win the lottery.

I'm going to continue with my RDR2 2nd playthrough. Save file says I'm 67.2% done so I guess that will take up the first 3-4 months of the year.

After that, maybe Indy will have had a discount by then (can't quite bring myself to pay £60 for a game)

After that i reckon there will be a bunch of indies (not Indy) to catch up on.

If there is something I learned during the last years, is "more a game bombs, and more a publisher needs money, the faster the Steam release happens", and this is honestly the more damaging thing for Steam competitors (both launchers and other platforms)
See Ubisoft, but there are many other examples (arguably even Sony, SM2 Steam version releasing so close after Concord is very suspicious too). The fact that Rebirth is coming to Steam so fast (and without EGS shenanigans) means the game bombed, there are no two ways about it

FWIW, Rebirth had an official 3 month exclusivity while 16 had 6 months going by sony's trailers/marketing iirc. SE took longer for both for some reason. Rebirth is also launching at 30% off and the twin pack + discounts while 16 launched at 50$ (that was the new RRP for the base game).

Yea chipping away at old games is also on my to do list in the new year.

There's been a bunch of gems I missed out on over the past 10 years or so that I want/need to play...

Nier games
Monster Hunter games
Fallout 76
KCD
Some very old stuff too like FFIV (3d) and FF9. Tho the rumors of 9 remake kind of putting me off. But I'll probably cave anyways. Everything gets a fucking remake these days so I need to try and not dismiss old games.

Also since Starfield didn't do a good enough job to satisfy my space exploration needs I think I will finally try and dive into NMS/EliteDangerous as well. At least I will wait for Todd to announce the new and final expansion before fully shelving SF. Hopefully they are cooking something good.

As for new stuff I think its pretty crazy that we might get two different Obsidian games with TOW2 and Avowed in the same year. I have to definitely play at least one of them lol.

Civ7 a possibility too but it has to be have great reviews at launch otherwise you kind of have to wait on expansions + discounts to get the improved/complete game.

And yea Snake Eater Delta is something I'm really hyped for but I am giving Konami until the summer to announce a release date. If not I will go ahead and finally replay MGS3 from the collection vol. 1.

GTA6 and Death Stranding 2 might finally get me to pick up a PS5 but Sony needs to further discount that thing. I wanna see well under 300$ prices before I do it.

So after reading about this on the other place, I decided to post about this here too even if it's mostly about Switch, since it is kinda Steam related too
It all started with this gematsu news about the cancellation of the western release of the Neptunia Rebirth trilogy and Death End Re Quest Z, apparently because they "do not comply with Nintendo guidelines" or something similar. DERQZ also doesn't have an upcoming Steam release so the PS versions are the only ones so far coming out in the west
But then I have been thinking: Many Idea Factory games have skipped Steam lately, in fact their only 2024 Steam release has been the last Date A Live VN (and that one came out only on Steam, no console version at all in the west). So, I was actually wondering if there was something going on behind the scenes and if certain games/series have been targeted again by "unclear content guidelines"
Another IF game which we know was banned from Steam is Tokyo Clanpool, but that game is also skipping Switch too (it is supposed to release on GoG however, so pc is not a dead end). Talking about sudden Switch bans, a poster on ERA linked a post on famiboards which lists all suddenly cancelled Switch titles in the west that have a release on othe platforms/regions

Hey, wait a moment. One of those games is not like the others. Daymare is not a japanese game, it's not an anime looking game either, it's a RE style 3rd person horror game

The game is out in Japan on Switch but the western release has been "delayed indefinitely" on the same platform, and let's be serious I doubt it's an issue of "running badly" or "quality control" because the e-shop is filled with literal fake games. The developer of Unpacking posted on bluesky about 5 fake games using the Unpacking brand that were never removed despite him contacting Nintendo about it
Did one of the guys banning anime games on Steam move to Nintendo? Are these "unclear Steam content guidelines" expanding to other platforms too? I think it's worth to keep an eye on upcoming games, especially from smaller, easier to "bully", publishers

All these anime games are becoming kind of a blur for me because of how similar they look. Honkay Star Rail, Whutering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero... Is any of this stuff worth checking out? They do look pretty cool.
Alright, so I would say there are currently five "new-gen" anime gachas that blur the line between mobile/console and PC games (in release order): Genshin Impact: Honkai Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero and Infinity Nikki. I play or have played all of them, so here's my opinion on them :

Genshin Impact: The OG breakout game that was responsible for kickstarting this new wave of high-budget mobile games. It's an open-world Action RPG with a big focus on narrative and exploration. The beginning story sections are a bit rough at times, but it's been consistently good-to-great for years now. The environment design is consistently very strong and I probably consider it one of the prettiest games ever at this point. The exploration is also consistently very good. Combat is fairly simple in turms of what buttons to press, but team-building is very rich (however Gacha-reliant to a large degree).
5.3 releases in 2 weeks, which is the conclusion to the current story chapter.
Fantastic music.

Honkai Star Rail: Second game from the Genshin people. It's a turn-based zone-based sci-fi JRPG with a big focus on narrative and combat modes (various endgame modes, rogue-like modes, etc). The combat system is fairly simple, but the encounter design is very good and it also has rich team-building (also Gacha-reliant). The story starts strong, then craters for a while, but has since then been also consistently good-to-very-good. There are multiple main-story threads and recurring characters and all that.
3.0 launches in January and is looking to be pretty hype.

Also has fantastic music.

Wuthering Waves: The first "Genshin-clone" from a competitor. Tries to differentiate itself by having a (in theory) more sci-fi leaning world and a bigger focus on skill-based combat, with perfect dodges and parries and all that jazz. I bailed shortly during 1.0 becaue the story was one of the worst things I've experienced and the localisation was ass in addition. Combat is indeed very good though, so ymmv if that's enough. 2.0 is coming soon.

Zenless Zone Zero: The newest game from the Genshin/Star Rail people. It's a young new team, which does show in certain aspects. It's an urban-fantasy game with a mix of slice-of-life post-apocalyptic city-live where you hang out with characters, play minigames in the Arcade and stuff, and then go into "Hollows" to navigate grid-based "dungeons" to solve puzzles, triggers events and ultimately fight monsters. At least that's what it used to be, but they are redoing that for existing and future main story in favor of full 3D levels with puzzles and platforming and stuff - will be interesting to see how that ends up, looks promising though.
Combat also leans more towards the skill-based side, with perfect dodges, parries and all that - at least in end-game and optional side stuff, the game's fairly easy for large parts to ease people in, possibly too easy too long. The story is fairly light-hearted and episodic with loose connecting tissues, but 1.4 is coming this week and they've advertised it as the "season finale" where everything comes together and things have been getting really dark, lol.
This video is 9 minutes cause it's trialer + all the upcoming new stuff and imo should do a decent job of showing the game

Also has fantastic music.

Infinity Nikki: Basically just released. It's an open-world dress-up game with a focus on platforming, collecting and, well, dressing up. The story feels a bit like a simple fairytale but casually throws in heavy themes or straight up gets dark at times.
Apparently the previous games have a whole lore iceberg

This game is not connected, but you can definitely feel this stuff is coming. While you ride through the world on you fancy bike, collecting Mario Galaxy Stars and have fashion battles against "pokemon trainer and gym leader" equivalents, people talk about a neighbouring kingdom getting invaded which is causing a refugee crisis and stuff :cold-sweat:
Game is super cozy and chill, has great setpieces, lots of collectibles (stars and clothing pieces or their crafting recipes) and the worldbuilding seems pretty solid and the story already goes interesting places.
Also has fantastic music.

If you're interested, pick one that sounds the most interesting to you and give it a try.
For me they've kind of replaced the Trails games after the garbage that was Cold Steel 4.
