My ho ho hoes šŸŽ…
I ended up buying a few games that are very cheap, like State of Decay 2, Divinity OS1 and the latest game of the original Picross developer because I was in the mood for some Picross.

No doubt Era's console gamers will be proud of me for not spending too much money on the biggest gambling and Nazi platform in the world. ;)
I saw we hit our weekly quota early for valve bad on era

I've picked up a few games this sale but mainly i've been good and held off on purchases so i can continue playing my "Library".
I did just pick up the XCOM 2 Ultimate Bundle for Ā£13 instead of Ā£140 though so that's nice.

Together with some cheapo games and the .HACK GU bundle.

XCOM 2: Shen's Last Gift | XCOM 2: Alien Hunters | XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - Tactical Legacy Pack | XCOM 2: War of the Chosen | XCOM 2: Anarchy's Children | XCOM 2: Resistance Warrior Pack | XCOMĀ® 2 | XCOM: Enemy Within | XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Slingshot Pack | XCOM: Enemy Unknown | .hack//G.U. Last Recode | Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia | LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias

oh and 1000xResist and State of Decay 2 on Steam the other day and a couple of bits and pieces on GOG/itch/etc but nothing major or expensive.

edit:
Looking at my Steam details i've spent roughly Ā£300 there this year with long stretches of buying nothing and aside from a few releases next year i can see me spending less and digging into my library more instead.

It's worth it because we get gems like this

The "open" nature of the PC is already being threatened by the increasingly monopolization in the hands of Valve, NVidia and Microsoft.

It's one of the reasons I've started getting back into console/Playstation gaming after several decades.

I didn't buy a lot, just:

  • KeyWe, since it was on my wishlist and sufficiently discounted (on Steam)
  • Sea of Stars, since I found out it now has coop and that's basically an instant buy for me in a JRPG (on Steam)
  • Octopath Traveller, since I finally saw it for under ā‚¬20, which was the maximum I set for it (on GMG)

Valve is the bad guy this week because of the Coffeezilla vids. CS gambling is sketchy and Valve could do more to crack down on it, but removing trading and the market would be a net loss for most users and would lead to Valve's games going the route of nearly every other F2P game where they charge an arm and a leg for skins.

I got back into TF2 a few months ago and bought a bunch of cheap hats for less than 5 bucks which is much more preferable than paying $5-20 per hat.

LMAO

"Open nature is threatened by the things I have dreamt up, so I've went back to a closed ecosystem"
There's definitely a parallel between people who think Valve is bad but console makers are good, and people who think the Democrats in the US are bad, so that makes voting Republican or Third Party okay. Both boil down to "This thing is not perfect, so that justifies any dumb-ass decision I make".

There are legitimate points of criticism that can be brought up against Valve. Unfortunately, any discussion about them gets immediately poisoned by people who want to piggyback off it in order to platform war without consequences. Any good-faith criticism is drowned out by the people that have a seething, burning hatred for the company.

Lately I have become increasingly frustrated by the very low quality of discussion on Resetera and I am planning to make a post in their community discussion thread on that topic. It used to be that I posted frequently in controversial threads, now I find myself increasingly thinking "eh, why even bother". The amount of garbage posts is so high that trying to have a meaningful discussion feels futile.

I left there... mid October? So much happened in the US election threads over the years with long-time posters being treated badly, and then the inevitable "Valve Bad" threads and it just became, like you say, a case of "Why bother?"" No-one needs constant bad-faith bitching and moaning. My mental health is so much better for dropping almost-all forums and almost-all social media.

I stopped posting on Resetera a while back.Iā€™ve sold a lot of games on their Buy/Sell/Trade thread, and donā€™t want to lose access over a stupid ban because I didnā€™t agree with the hive mind.

Thatā€™s because moderation team is useless, and the bad faith actors have learned how to weaponize it.

I remember recently the site admin (Bdubs I think?) flat out said that from a moderating perspective Company Ethics is the new vehicle for platform warring as the standard old way (M$ Xbots, Sony Ponies, etc.) was tired and too transparent.

Now people get their digs in based on how companies are run because itā€™s one of the few avenues left for plausible deniability.

Itā€™s pretty telling viewed from that lens.

Itā€™s too bad as thereā€™s a world where these issues can be explored. But most certainly not on gaming forums where this data is weaponized for bad-faith platform warring.

Guess itā€™s mildly entertaining in small doses just to see how far some people will go trying to stealth troll, but Iā€™ve quickly learned that itā€™s never worth engaging with on a serious level.

Where I'm from there's a saying that goes something like "Those who look for it, find it"
I use steam almost daily and I use the forums from time to time, mostly for technical stuff when a game decides to be a bit temperamental, and I'm yet to find any of those blatant nazi and hateful messages/groups that keep getting mentioned. Do they exist? Probably yes but I'm not sure it's a much more widespread issue than on any other platform and/or social media site and I'd really need to dig through the mud to find them. Still, it would be better if there were none instead of a few so any mitigation actions taken by valve would be welcome.

At the end of the day it just boils down to platform warring. PC gaming (specifically steam) has grown too big too fast, especially considering how it was practically dead and on life support 20 years ago, and some don't like how their branded boxes aren't the end-all be-all they once were. There's no reasoning with these people so just leave them be and move on.

Yeah, I've learned here and discord are the places for discussions and era is the place for hot takes and one sentence posts tbh

At least I feel much better knowing I actually shut up and buy games instead of endlessly arguing against imaginary enemies
The anti-woke brigade makes discussing games quite hard nowadays, even just reading discussions in places Im not even registered at is becoming exhausting.

Before, when there were something people didn't like about a game, they moved on with their lives.

The anti-woke people actually want to harass and force devs to make the games they want. devs are not allowed to make the games they want anymore.

In the spirit of the Holiday season I'm touring the UN General Assembly in New York today. Remembering a time when nations actually worked together on things.

There's probably a lesson in there for us somewhere

I don't engage with any of this crap. I honestly don't know where you people find the patience. I'd rather shoot myself in the head than arguing over stupid shit with randoms on the internet at the end of a stressful day at work. That's time that can be spent playing games.

9800X3D is ā‚¬950 in my country. Completely absurd. And sad. AMD finally beats Intel and their product can't be bought unless you want to pay almost double the price.
It was Ā£490 to Ā£520 ish in my country last time i looked but not delivered for another 3 weeks or end of Jan at the earliest.
Hopefully i can pick one up to kickstart my AM5 build in Feb but if not then my current rig will do for a while yet.

AMD has been beating Intel for years in terms of price per performance, and 7800X3D was making Intel CPUs look like overpriced (and broken) trash for years. It's just gotten so bad recently that Intel barely feels like they are even trying to compete with AMD anymore for the Desktop market.

That said, it does seem like 9800X3D is under some massive price pressure right now. It was 55o in November when I check PCpartpicker, and now hovers around 620ā‚¬. I guess yield must be kinda bad relative to the demand, so the market does what the market does and price goes up massively.

Selaco is an extremely intense FPS. My ass was sore today because I was clenching it so frequently playing Selaco yesterday! At first, I was like, "did I bruise my tailbone? I don't remember falling on my butt."

also, happy holidays
NGL I first read that as cleaning, not clenching. Gives the whole sentence a whole new meaning!
