As a Magic player a lot of those cards are pretty mid. The art is nice if you're into FF art but the designs are nothing special

Step 1: release a successful new gaas based on a popular property
Step 2: release updates that allow the game to remain successful after launch
Step 3: lose your job?
The industry needs to do better with contractual work. Employees need to have more power. and more guarantees.

And this needs to all be in place before they even start working on these giant games.

I just crossed 50 hours played mark in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and I still haven't done a single main quest after the prologue. It is a true masterpiece of immersive RPG design and I can't think of any game like it. I would say it is the closest we have gotten to having an actual time machine. And aside from some graphical glitches (texture flicker in a forest, shadow flicker on one specific tree in a village) I haven't encountered any bugs (which does not mean there aren't any of course). They took a year just to bugfix and optimize the game, and it was so worth it:

Compare it to e.g. Dragon's Dogma II by the little unknown indie outfit called Capcom:

I hope Warhorse will keep Cryengine for the future and just keep improving it themselves. I love the look and even more importantly the feel of the game.

Sounds a lot like Skyrim/Oblivion/Starfield

I remember starting Starfield and 30 minutes in....just leaving Jemison and flying to Mars. And doing quests/exploring for dozens of hours across so many planets/sysems.. while all the main characters stood there at that roundtable back in Jemison waiting for me to do the main questline.

I would just pick up a companion and leave from time to time without doing any of the main story missions. I played the game for like 90hrs and did only 3 of the main story quests lol.

___

Also is the first Kingdom Come designed the same way? I've heard so many good things about it and the sequel now. I think I might give that Royal Edition a shot later in the year.

The TF2 SDK has arrived!

Mod makers, rejoice! We've just released a massive update to the Source SDK, adding all the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This update will allow content creators to build completely new games based on TF2. We're also doing a big update to all our multiplayer back-catalogue Source engine titles (TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S), adding 64-bit binary support, a scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and a lot of other improvements!

Unlike the Steam Workshop or local content mods, this SDK gives mod makers the ability to change, extend or rewrite TF2, making anything from small tweaks to complete conversions possible.

The SDK is licensed to users on a non-commercial basis, meaning that any mod created using the SDK must be free, and any content in those mods must be free. TF2 mods may be published on the Steam Store, and after publication will appear as new games in the Steam game list.

Players have a lot of investment in their TF2 inventories, and Steam Workshop contributors have created of a lot of that content. The majority of items in the game now are thanks to the hard work of the TF2 community. To respect that, we're asking TF2 mod makers continue to respect that connection, and to not make mods that have the purpose of trying to profit off Workshop contributors' efforts. We're hoping that many mods will continue to allow players access their TF2 inventory, if this makes sense for the mod.

Questions? See the Steamworks Source Engine mods FAQ.

Was out when embargo lifted so couldn't post here in time. I played Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii from start to finish on Deck with 0 issues. Also tested it on ROG Ally and the PS5 version for RPG Site. This PC port builds on the last one with better organization and thankfully lets me force button prompts instead of auto detecting. Being able to use PS5 button prompts on Deck dramatically helped with the minigames and QTEs lol.

First KCD has about 3-4 hours of mostly linear, heavily storydriven prologue (you still get some choice in how to achieve things, but you do not have access to open world). Once some events happen, you wake up in a mill and from that point on you are free to do whatever you want, with entire map accessible. However, there are still some important mechanics to learn so I would suggest doing few more main quests from that point since they teach them. And since you start as a literal peasant, the game does require you to train doing things if you want to suceed, e.g. swordfighting or lockpicking, or alchemy.

For the last few Yakuza games I had to make my own button mod because the ones available are always conversion from Xbox to PS and not Switch Pro to PS (I'm using 8BitDo Pro 2 in NS Pro Controller mode).

Karaoke is enjoyable once again. :flare_bath:

lmao chimera squad is as much a sequel as it is to like saying "Hey lets get some authentic mexican food!" and going to taco bell
This is exactly the truth.

Chimera Squad was a fun idea they tried to make into a full game the abandoned after getting like 50% of the way there. It has 1 interesting idea (close quarters XCOM with like Hero powers) then does nothing else with it. A spin off game, sure, but not a sequel.

Remember kids, business people know best.

”Why are Firaxis making Xcom when we can give them a Marvel license? I’m smart, I know this will sell. Just do as I say or you’re fired!”

”What do you mean the audience who buy Civ and Xcom don’t want capeshit? We paid Disney millions for that license. That’s it, you’re fired! You there, you’re promoted. Go make Civilization VII. And design it for people who don’t like Civ. I’m smart, I know this will end well. Just do as I say or you’re fired too!”

Honestly the Midnight Suns hate i never understood. I do want Marvel games and love XCOM. I like Card games. It was a total win for me.

The relationship/between combat stuff was very skippable and didn't bother me.

Saw some buzz about this (its dev has a game studio that made a VR compatible game), if anyone cares. Never thought about a replacement for windows file explorer tbh. Wouldn't like the idea of duplicate functions. Some comments etc. on its launch tweet: https://x.com/vkrajacic/status/1891886342549688560

Took me quite a while to understand this joke. No wonder, I'm maidenless.

I still remember booting PREY 2017 (another CryEngine game) on my non-gaming college laptop, and couldn't believe my eyes how smoothly it ran (every other game was a sub 30 shutter fest).
I understand both games have different scopes (open zones w/ loading screens VS. open world) but if utilized right, CryEngine can give amazing results.

Looking at this week's most popular PlayStation games, I was shocked to see the latest installment in Sid Meier's Civilization franchise failing to make both the top 40 and the top 100 most-played games at launch. Sure, strategy games aren't usually a big deal on consoles, but does that rule apply to Civ too? Or is there something else that explains why Civilization VII's PS5 and PS4 launch player count looks so low?
I'm smart!

Since I still like to play older games, I guess I dodged a bullet in getting a 4070 Super recently instead of going for a 50 series card.
Quite possibly the WORST news I've heard.
Threatening PC Gaming's biggest asset, backwards compatibility is downright criminal. My reasoning to buy NVIDIA was because it was the most compatible card, but now I'm not so sure.

Been playing the tutorial of Avowed, and combat and world/level design seems pretty nice so far. Not sure how it will hold up in a lengthy title, but I kinda dig the combat too. Lot's of options, in particular for mages and spell casters too. Pretty easy to combine magic with all sorts of other weapon types too.

I'm strangely interested in Avowed. POE didn't catch my attention but I wouldn't say no to a Bethesda-but-actually good game. And I'm a sucker for the weird island trope. Now to decide if I retry POE (too Baldur-lite, too wordy but uninteresting) or start with this one. And obviously on game pass, no way I splurge 70 on a B game.

Chimera Squad was totally ok, for $20. It shoots for a bit of a different thing than main XCOM and that's fine.

It does make me wonder if there's anyone inside Firaxis that would champion XCOM after Jake Solomon left.

Given how big XCOM was, they will return to it eventually. Unless the IP is not theirs and licensing costs are whack.

I did it, I somehow got myself a 1 month ban from Era from something I posted 5 days ago. But oh well, that happens quite frequently lately. Better to never make political comparisons after all, but it will be funny to revisit that thread in 4 years and see how things will actually go considering the current world climate
I don't hide my shame, and I won't change my views. No matter how much you think it's "good" (spoiler: absolutely never) censorship will always loop back and bite you in the ass. The thread was the one about the Neptunia/Idea Factory Nintendo bans

Looks kind of janky, but I'm a Meguro simp so I'll play it.

Every two-bit CEO and wannabe MBA thinks Valve has some secret black magic but all they do is try to treat the user as well as possible. They don't always succeed but they're a lot more successful than the other guys.

  • consolified
  • UI atrocious
  • max map size normal
  • max MP size 5 in the first 2 ages, 8 only if you start in the last age
  • last age only goes to 1950 and has a hard end, cant play after that
  • English civilization clearly held back for a DLC release (england was always in civ and London was used as an example for why they used the civ-age system and the economic victory screen depicts London
  • there is a hard end to every age and you start with a new civilization in the next age (only the personality you picked will be constant)
  • look at this AI atrocity that is the economic victory screen:
Not gonna lie, the Fortnite dances being added to the game and shown in advertising material, alongside the $70 pricetag and different pricing tiers was enough to tell me something was up. Apparently you cannot play past the win condition as well.
Yeah the UE5 thing is another kind of related aspect to this. I've had people tell me I'm crazy for this but I can tell almost every single time a game is using UE5, they mostly all look the same to me and it's a lighting thing usually. That engine's way of lighting games is just SO unappealing to me and it's why I can always spot it.
Based from my experience using Unreal Engine 4/5, how the engine is structured makes it really difficult to deviate from a specific kind of pipeline (the photorealistic PBR pipeline), not enough effort is put into the engine's forward rendering mode (even then, now you can't really raise the shadow resolution through cvars or have TAA/FXAA for some reason), Lumen is extremely grainy (and even the hardware RT mode feels like a downgrade from UE4's old raytracing system).

Epic hasn't done much to improve the lightmap system or bring GPU lightmass out of beta (Both of which don't work on the Linux editor). which GPU lightmass would be fine for most linear games (Out of all of the games that I've seen use Lumen, only Fortnite really benefits from it). They now disable static lighting support in the project settings and each map's world settings, meaning that there's even more project settings that need to be changed.

If you want toon shading, without modifying a ton of engine source code and shader code to have a hacky solution for it, and without post-processing (Because it sucks for that), you are stuck with unlit materials and messing around with shader code for distance field shadows to effectively fake shadow casting (this doesn't work with forward rendering either, and Epic patched out the bug that was allowing materials to access shadow information). You probably also need to fake point lights using Blueprints and some clever material parameter and/or render target tricks, but those will lack shadows. Some Epic employees claims that the new Strata Materials system is supposed to work towards allowing this kind of stuff, but at the moment, it's mostly restricted to material layers and such. From what I could gather from the HiFi Rush talk, they're using forward rendering for characters (without shadow casting), and their own engine modifications to effectively hook different stages of the rendering pipeline.

Unreal Engine isn't necessarily a poorly optimized game engine (if you know what you're doing), just that Epic poorly communicates how to use specific features (their C++ documentation has been crap for years), and that results in suboptimal results from developers that aren't willing to spend time fine-tuning and investigating issues. The only big sticklers for Unreal, optimization wise, are the new rendering features, the PSO stuttering, and the asset streaming system having stuttering (Which couldn't be fixed with Returnal).
