How do you top a year in which Planescape: Torment and this were released?

It helps that in 80s and 90s, devs were huge readers or hired prolific authors for their games.

Today, with exceptions like Pentiment and Disco Elysium, people from literature spaces aren't consulted or have any interest in games. Not to mention how long the dev cycles have become. True innovation can only be achieved by paying to experts and artists.
Something that current C-suits forget in pursuit of endless shareholder value creation rat race.
