Let me be the contrarian here for a minute and say that I felt Fall Guys really should be free-to-play ... and with the success it has and now even more money behind it, it could probably remain a fair F2P title for a good long while before it turns predatory.

I get the feeling though that it actually won't become F2P and will just get ported to more platforms ... and get taken off Steam.

I mean if you consider how Fall Guys mostly blew up due to being a PS+ game at launch you're probably right.

But at the same time, he signed an exclusivity deal with a company that paid over a hundred developers to boycott Steam and keeps continuing to do so. 😞

Don't get me wrong, his post about exclusivity is great and I understand his decision to take Epic's money. But I still won't buy Axiom Verge 2. Games locked to a single launcher because of a business deal goes straight against my vision on healthy competition, and even more against the open nature of pc gaming.

Nor should you. It's nice to not be gaslit by the dev in their explanation and for them to be straight forward. In 2021, we've had to lower the bar for this kind of thing sadly

Makes sense, Kena is the only eggsclusive that looks kinda interesting, Timmy probably hate the Idea of this game becoming a hit only after it leaves his store.

Game will probably die off because of it tho'. :shrugblob:

Prior to acquiring these devs and the rocket league devs, how big was Epic? I can't image they have only one dev team devoted solely to fortnite, and every other employee works on the engine or their business/licensing. How can they not just build their own titles?

The industry is suffering from consolidation, this is just Epic trying to not miss that train and stay relevant with their audience.
 
Never cared if they have their own games as exclusive tbh, I doubt anyone complained Fortnite or UT was on their launcher/store. Same deal if they buy more.

Though buying them after a game is done or almost is a bit eh, others allow such games to remain multiplatform (minecraft for ms, beat saber for oculus, etc.).

But oh well. I'm curious how the recent low key additions of low key games that are on other stores or launch simultaneously fare. Geneforge, Loop Hero, Wrath.

Like, are the sales on EGS even a blip in their financial situation? And how did they get on there, via a deal, just talks, or is it open for releases like Steam now?

I realize consolidation and acquisitions is the current "in" thing for the industry, I'm just curious if Epic proper has anything else but the engine and Fortnite in active development? It seems like bad business to rely on so few streams for active revenue even if one is the golden egg-laying goose for the moment

Unreal and Fortnite aren't going anywhere anytime soon and will still provide hugue revenues.. On the other part the consolidation thing is pretty much going really fast and you need to move before the others, you would be surprised how fast some companies are moving behind the scenes.
 
One really "bad" thing about EGS for developers? (at least if you don't get money bag to compensate)

They hold your money for insanely long, paying January sales on around mid April.
(Steam pays January sales by end of February)

Kena looks awesome, but there's been some talk that the studio treated at least one of their developers badly. Makes me less inclined to want to get the game anytime soon. It was going to be a PS5 purchase once I get that system, but now I'm not so sure.

Kena LOOKS awesome, but I have yet too see something convincing me it has more than looks going for it.

I’m even a sucker for that type of action adventure in general... But all we saw so far is some awkward combat. I’m interested to learn if there’s also good plat forming, puzzles, exploration or what else to be sure this is the type of game I’m hoping it to be.

And then of course wait to actually buy it on Steam, because fuck if I’m ever going to spend money on the EGS.

I'm also a sucker for any action adventure and it looks in the spirit of beyond good and evil. As you say though it seems very much flash at the moment with a lot of their awesome cinematics thrown in. I really want to see some uninterrupted gameplay with the developer talking about what to expect with puzzles, platforming etc...

I did like the aesthetic, themes and rendering of it a lot as well, and I can even forgive the studio for the exclusive if they've been bought out - they arguably have no say in the matter. I think?

That being said, same reservations - this was as close to an E3-bullshit show as it gets and I'd rather wait and see.

Kena is made by an animation studio that has zero experience with videogames so yeah, it looks visually amazing but I'm still super skeptical about the actual game part, specially considering the rumours of troubled development.

HZD was Bronze on "2020's best of Steam" list, and by the numbers it should be really close to the million copies (which is amazing if you ask me for a later port that was full price with only one sale and in less than a year) so yeah, you can bet it should way less on EGS than on Steam and while we don't have numbers, remember that HZD released on GOG too (I guess Days Gone will do the same too, at a later date)

Assuming Days Gone will not suffer the same porting issues that HZD had upon release, its sales will likely be higher, with HZD catching up.

Most likely as:

1 - The port will probably will be way better given that it's a not-so-modified UE4 game, which makes it by definition, easier to port.
2 - While dinobots are amazing, I think the Zombie genre sells way better on PC than on consoles thanks mostly to other big players like DayZ or so, assuming people are into the open-world esque of Days Gone, game will probably sell better than HZD in the same amount of time.
3 - Price and sales will be different this time, Sony most likely saw an increase of the sales when they put HZD on sale last X-mas so I kind of expect them to put their games on sale more regularly, we will see tho, this is just my own theory.

Well, we don't have numbers of Days Gone yet but, in theory, if we take as potential peak 800k-1M like HZD, Bloodborne should do 2M-2.5M to surpass that and, frankly, it would depend on what's coming out at the moment of BB release, it's a full poll of potential variables to keep in mind, it will be interesting to check that data tho. :blobmorning:

Yeah, that would be pretty much the ballpark I'm expecting.

I'd be a lot more dubious about the Uncharted games, on the other hand. While they aren't what I'm personally interested in, I could see those becoming robust sellers out of sheer reputation and because a lot of people would love to use them as graphical showcases for their machines.

Bloodbore will sell 5 million on Steam within a year, even if there are no sales larger than 20% off. I would be willing to bet on that.
Over 100 million USD in revenue for Sony for doing almost nothing. Great redistribution of wealth.

I think Bloodborne's sales potential is greatly overstated. It's just built a legacy as this legendary game because of exclusivity and has become a golden goose for forum warriors. God of War and Days Gone would likely sell more overall.

Yeah I think it's realistic to base expectations on how other Fromsoft titles performed. Google search says that Dark Soul 2 sold 2.5 million copies a year after release, so probably 3.5 million copies for Bloodborne?

That's the thing, if I had to choose a sales range it would be 2-3 million copies which is what the biggest Souls-like games usually sell.
Why would be BB any different if it's based in the same genre?

The question above was sales in a year.

DS3 did 3M in a month. And 10M after four years. I haven't found data on DS3 sales after a year, specifically, but 5M looks like a pretty conservative estimate.

So 3.5M in a year for Bloodborne, per Myradeer above, seems quite on the pessimistic end to me.

More likely that 505 gave up on selling the EGS version and they probably didn't remember to call the person on Epic responsible to update the prices on the store.
