Discussion Ethically Online

lol, one of the email places I actually did get, Informaniak, which prides itself on being the "ethical web", their words are now saying anyone wanting privacy are criminals. Enshittyfication comes for everyone it seems.

I'm in the process of creating email on my domain, I'm trying to create one email for each use case.

Like I want something that is tied to funding like Patreon and such, business, social media and even a fully private one. I dont just want to make a "business@lepertti.com" since that would be little boring.

But I have no idea what to actually call them lol, I keep making emails and deleting them since they dont feel right.

I think most of them can be boring, especially if you're only using them to register for things and not sharing them with the public. You could even just make them a random string so you're not attached to the address if they sell your data to someone and the email is forever tainted by spam bots.

Public-facing ones can be a bit more exciting, like letstalk@lepertti.com

Late to the party as I've not been visiting these parts regularly but what a fantastic thread and so much useful info :blobcheer:
Definitely worrying news about Switzerland as I've been slowly migrating my stuff from Googoo to Proton.
Installed Zen to check it out because it's so pretty lashman :smiling-face-with-heart-shaped-eyes:

Still wondering what search engine to use, DuckDuckGo used to be pretty bad for me last time, Kagi is paid so I installed the free version to check it out but I already see they also have a bunch of ai stuff included ("use AI to filter out AI images" XD). Has anyone tried Brave Search? I know Brave come with their own baggage but maybe it's at least good.

Yeah coming up with anything public facing is tough, I still haven't picked a domain. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:
Hell, my username I just randomly picked from a huge physical dictionary. Just flipped to a random page and pointed at a word. Actually technically I picked two words at the time (Major Parsnip) but eventually dropped the Major part partially because people kept shortening it to Major instead of Parsnip, and I didn't like that.

For most of my current emails that are not really public facing I've actually been using bitwarden passphrase generator, it just gives me 5 words and I keep generating until I see a "good" word pair that's not annoying to write.

I use Startpage for search.

I went with very French names that doesn’t make much sense lol, for example for business emails I will use laboulangerie @ lepertti.com . There is a theme to all emails and it makes sense in my mind at least.XD

So I installed Bazzite yesterday in my continued attempt to move away from corporations owning me. It's definitely gonna take some getting used to and there's apparently a scroll wheel bug that annoys me but overall it's been a surprisingly smooth transition.

I've also gotten closer to moving away from Windows, yesterday I uninstalled a bunch of games and shrunk my main partition so that I can fit it in an older secondary 500gb sata ssd and migrated the Win10 install there. So now I have a 2tb primary boot nvme drive just waiting for me to plop a linux on it. Still hemming and hawing between couple distros, but I'm mostly leaning towards CachyOS at the moment.

A few days ago I moved over to codeberg for version control. Feels like the more ethical choice over GitHub.

Think I have most bases covered now, I have my emails, discord alternative, version control, YouTube backups, mastodon, my own blog engine.

Next step is settling on search engine and browser. I use duck duck go now and for browser Im leaning towards vivendi

I may switch back to Safari while I am in the Apple ecosystem.

There are features and apps that hook into Safari features that will be far more beneficial to me privacy-wise than a third party browser will be.

Password and bookmark sync won't be used, however. I'll stick to Proton and my own self-hosted bookmarking app for that.

As for search engines though, I am 100% Kagi all the way. Yes, I pay monthly for it, but the results are also better than Google.

Having tried the free Kagi trial it was easily the best search engine I've used.

I'm fairly sure I've finally decided on a domain name. Was brainstorming earlier in the week and came up with some options that are available and put them on a txt file so I don't forget and to also sit on them and stew them a bit and see if I still like them in a few days. So we might have a winner.

Porkbun seems like a well liked registrar these days. I used namecheap last time I had a domain and they were totally fine but I have no loyalty or anything to them. So I guess I'll probably go with porkbun. It's also a pretty solid name, porkbun I mean. They clearly need to teach lessons on how to come up with good domain names.

It does occur to me that since I'm not really planning to have a homepage, just a domain for emails, not sure how that actually works in practice. In the past I've always done the opposite, no emails, just a webpage. :toucan:
Is the webpage just going to be like a placeholder thing, or maybe I should redirect it to my social media or something. I guess I could make it a simple static page or something too if I really feel like it. I could probably get hosting for cheap (and by cheap I mean free) from a friend if I wanted to.
