Discussion Ethically Online

a lot of the Japanese ones are, but misskey in itself is just another piece of software - like mastodon etc.

It’s software like Mastodon. I don’t know if there’s a particular Misskey instance, but I’m talking about hosting my own on my server, not joining an instance.
Ahh, I see. I always say misskey on the Federated feed, usually with hentai so I figured that's where all the goons were.

I have Unlimited. Other than the AI shit (which has a separate subscription) I use all their apps and services. It’s all very high quality, but their Linux support needs work.

I’d recommend getting a private domain and using it with Proton Mail, as some sites block @proton.me email addresses because surveillance capitalism is a cartel and they do each other a solid by making using a privacy-respecting service inhospitable.

Biggest issue for me is, Im trying to have less not more subscriptions. Going to see how it works out just having my own emails on my domain, thus far its mostly good, only issue was kofi which is marked as spam and cant get them to my email. But my emails have been accepted everywhere thus far.

I think reducing subscriptions is fine. But I also feel paying a sub for something that has value and has an ongoing cost to run/maintain is not a bad thing, so long as it respects your privacy.

Paying for Netflix: bad. You should be able to purchase the shows and films you want to watch rather than subscribe. There’s very little ongoing cost associated with providing DRM-free downloads, if they wanted to.

Paying for email: fine. It’s an ongoing cost to run and I also think it’s mission critical enough that you need reliability and robustness, so I wouldn’t self-host either.

It's gonna sound really stupid, but how do I get a private domain?

I'll try to reduce my subs this year, my main target is Amazon Prime.

Speaking of subs, I did sub to Libro.fm for audiobooks, Libro is an employee owned company and they share profits with a bookstore of your choice, and they got a promo right now where they give you two extra credits to purchase a book, additional to the credit you get each month with the sub.

Fuck Amazon, Audible and Jeff Bezos.

Another cup of coffee of course. Does CEX pay good?
I did indeed get a second cup. Now I’m full of caffeine.

And CEX pay OK for some things, terrible for others. They offer prices similar to eBay after shipping and fees if you exchange for vouchers, which is what I did, but their cash offer is poor.

I traded in my Quest 2 and a few old games for a PSVR 2 and PC adapter.

I also need to sell / trade my Quest 2, I used it a grand total of like 3 hours. VR is not for me.

Why does fediverse keep doing this? I know its pretty mild but this shaming and shitting on others to push themselves up is not only pretty lame its also toxic. So when the pillars of the community keep doing it, it sets kind of a bad tone.

Just to make sure its not only a pixelfed thing.

I was mostly talking about the issue with the fediverse at large, they keep shit talking and shaming everything that isnt part of the fediverse, like pixelfeds whole indenty is to shit talk instagram and tiktok while just copying them straight. My issue is that it bring such a bad tone, like promote your stuff on its merits. Only bullies make themselves look better by pushing others down.

Yeah, agreed.

I prefer bookstore dot org and libro dot fm angle of 'friends don't let friends buy from amazon'.

Speaking of which, are things on audible copy protected? Like can I download what I have there and delete the app?
Audible does have DRM. Libro fm is completely DRM free but it's also more expensive.

But with the subscription of 15 bucks a month you get one book of your choosing, which is fair given how long some books are.

I do agree there's still too much friction involved. I assume a lot of folks will stop on their tracks once they have to choose a server.
Also feels like no one is recommending anyone to use the fediverse, most people drift there on their own because of convictions. (again, shaming people into using it doesnt count as recommending lol)
