Finished Lewis' event, the "PNC Collab". Not a bad story, they obviously tried to go for nostalgia using NC's soundtrack and multiple references (although I got tired of the "remember this place from that one NC chapter ; )" by the 3rd node). The fights and the story structure evoked NC well enough, but the event still feels like the many "filler events with various future set-ups" we saw in the past, especially with the whole "is someone from 42Lab doing things behind Persica's back?" which is clearly connected to Lind's event "did someone steal 3rd gen doll data from Persica?"
But, even after trying to not think about it and waiting to play it on my own, my opinion hasn't changed one bit: why, why Lewis. She is so, so forced into the story. Most of the time she isn't even in the story or with the commander/professor, and let's not even talk about all the times they try to pretend she is somehow super important because she has both her griffin and PNC memories and she struggles for this harsh role because by the end it's obvious she is not the only one. Persicaria clearly has a bigger role (and even gets the only CG in the event). Persicaria even has a bigger connection to the event boss Beelneith because, outside of the fact they obviously look the same, it's a direct reference to how (Neural Cloud spoilers) she becomes the next Entropy Queen after the original was defeated at the end (since long story short there must always be an Entropy Queen in Magrasea). This would explain why Beelneith can control entropics, hell she basically looks exactly how Persicaria looked after becoming the Queen and it's even referenced a few times like when Lewis asks her if she can use her other power (the power to control entropics) to solve the issue. Like, it also makes way more sense as a way to explain why the villain is trying to get the Professor back in Magrasea since after becoming the Entropic Queen Persicaria seals herself and all entropics in the Tartarus Sector (the place where Entropics are born) to keep the entire server safe, and she only comunicates to the rest of the cast using a projector after that point. It would actually make the story stronger and hit harder because this event would be the first time she not only could meet the Professor again, but could actually get out into the rest of Magrasea after 10 years, and again works better with what Beelneith was trying to do, and most importantly it would still work perfectly with the part where it's revealed someone from the real world intentionally set the virus loose because they're trying to steal Magrasea's data and Beelneith was just a pawn
Instead they take Lewis, which wasn't even there at launch, she was actually one of the last additions to the game, although technically everyone "was always there" because of how the story was written, (badly) make up something to justify her being important to the event, make it so the Commander willingly erased his memories as the Professor and abandoned everyone he met there to make it harder for someone who is trying to steal all the data saved in Magrasea instead of just... not talking about it in the real world since who knows who is listening to who, and then, while hype, you end the event with the reveal every PNC doll is actually already perfectly capable to exist in the real world even if we conveniently never see them because making portraits costs too much money for a throaway filler event, and the commander regains all of the Professor's memories anyway so what exactly was the point
Like, it's obvious the event was originally written around Persicaria being the new doll, a boring choice but acceptable (and it's not like this would have fucked with canon in some way since the story can end in a way and the covenant/crew deck bond story could still happen in an unnamed future time or simply be fanservice). But after they announced the "collab" PNC literally died (all right, the servers are still up but come on, it didn't get a single new piece of content in 3/4 years. It's dead) and so they had to struggle to find a way to still do it while avoiding waste too much money on it (the final boss doesn't event have a unique model and it's just a bigger amalgamation of the most basic Entropy mook), and so they picked Lewis since she was the perfect doll to fix a few things lacking in the game at that point, like how all MGs sucked before her. I mean, Persicaria also would have solved a similar problem by being a Blade unit and honestly it would have made the story that more impactful. And it would have been a neat way to have Persica but with bigger boobs be playable as an alternate costume too
What a massive waste. And who knows if these plot points will ever go somewhere considering the (already) long tail of announced/upcoming dolls and how the story is moving currently
