Seems like Mozilla.social is up and running, probably still in the works and not opened for public according to some reddit posts, and I don't see a press release anywhere. I didn't try to log in myself.

I've been using notifications so I don't miss posts, but I wish it would highlight the posts you haven't read yet.

As soon as the Mozilla instance opens up sign up il be back on Mastodon.
I firmly believe if Mastodon/Fediverse is to really flourish you will need more bigger instances not run by a random person with a rented cloud server.
Also they need to add so you can move your post history as well not just your followers.
Did Mozilla provided a date for when they will open their stance?

I don't know how these work but I wonder if some websites can do something to add support to this process without users owning a domain/website, like say someone is on artstation or other portfolio sites, they can verify themselves as the owner of that portfolio account, etc.

Ah so it was available before? Thought it was something new.:)
no, definitely not new, haha :)

but yeah - it's free, and not limited (like twitter's api was even before the crackdown - that's why every single twitter client sucked balls)

So I know metacouncil hosts it's own instance.

Out of curiosity, what seems to be the cost burden of that on your end? I've been thinking about hosting a private instance for a few friends (like 3 people tops) and was curious if there's really any way to have an estimate on the cost.

yeah, absolutely :) you can just get the lowest $6 plan from Masto.host - Fully Managed Mastodon Hosting and it will be more than enough for like 10+ people (don't pay any attention to the stats on the website, those are balanced for INCREDIBLY heavy use, lol), and the MC one is running on the $10 plan, lol

Oh ok, that's good to know. Yeah I saw the metrics and was a bit concerned about the costs based on that, but if it's tuned to higher usage stats then it may work out. I'm still shopping options.

I am a bit jealous of Pleroma's reaction emoji feature.

Oh and for context -- it's not that Mastodon.art is terrible, but I find some of the moderation policies to be a bit annoying to deal with since it has put full restrictions on some relatively large instances. Obviously administration is a difficult task, but I think it might be better for me to just migrate to my own instance where I can make these types of choices myself lol.

yeah, definitely tuned for EXTREMELY heavy use! :p i mean - the gaming news bot is running on the MC server, and i barely get any blips in sidekiq, lol :) and i definitely didn't have any problems with masto.host so far. Hugo does really awesome job with it, and you can actually just talk to him if something's going on, no need to go through customer support agents or whatever :p plus - he pretty much always updates to the newest release immediately, which is also nice

yeah, i suppose, but at least you can do custom emotes! :)

yeah, i can totally understand that :) and to be fair - the goal of the fediverse is to have lots and lots of small instances, not a few big ones :) so you're definitely contributing to it going in the right direction :D plus, you know - you've got full control over everything

Linking to reddit is broken for some reason, but Discourse is adding ActivityPub intergration

Curious to see how that is used in the real world. But it looks super exciting!

Good on arstechnica. I browsed the comments section/forums on their site not too long ago and they seem like a decent crowd.

People don't seem to realize that it's also their benefit to move off twitter if they actually want any kind of meaningful social interactions with their community, it's more than just posting, getting clicks and "engagement", especially not if you already built a community that will now be overrun by random blue subs, and there's no way for you to moderate/curate your thread, and also impossible to have any good and positive interactions.

Like I mentioned before, it's a good way to curate their audience/followers, I remember some sites tweeted about moving to mastodon and all the users are just being shit to them in the replies, you don't need/want these people following you. People who are already big on social media should at least try moving away from it, otherwise they're just clinging on dumb big numbers like other grifters on the platform.

People also need to think about why a platform is harmful, and give support to the proper ones and not just jumping on some random internet bandwagoning.

Not sure if you guys are also following the BlueSky developments, but I really have mixed feelings on the whole thing.

One half of me, having known that BS was in development for a while, is happy that it essentially vindicates what many of us were clammering about in terms of the federated internet being a radical new direction for the internet and an ideal future for social media services. Another half of me, however, doesn't fully believe that BS will really have any instances at all since it all seems very "proof of concept' and the details around when and how to run your own instance is very cryptic.

I don't really think we can trust Jack Dorsey to follow through since I don't really get trustworthy vibes from him or his partners at Twitter.

Jack Dorsey is a weird libertarian tech bro.

Remember, the big conceptual difference between Bluesky and the Fediverse is Dorsey has a profit motive.

Profit motives always lead to centralisation and closing things off.

we absolutely cannot! not even for a millisecond

and from what i've seen bluesky will add blocks (doesn't even have that yet) but they will be PUBLIC, and won't have DMs (at all), etc. etc. etc. - just one massive shitshow

Better onboarding is kind of a necessary evil, although some might have to learn the hard way when they inevitably have to jump to different instance later (and probably losing their content).

Few quotes, more in link. Curious to see their approach, harassment is still major problem that I feel like people still like to ignore on social media.

If you want to be a member of Mozilla.Social, Mozilla’s new Mastodon instance, you’re not allowed to harass other users. You’re also not allowed to use derogatory language about gender, sex, sexual orientation, race, age, ability, or any other “physical, social or cultural attributes or classifications.” You can’t spread misinformation and disinformation, either.
Mozilla’s content policies also make clear that the platform will err on the side of protecting people who need to be protected, who tend to be more vulnerable in most online spaces. Teixeira says he expects to take some heat for that stance, but he’s okay with it. That’s kind of the whole point. “This is what it means to stake out a point of view on content,” he says. Above all, he wants to make Mozilla.Social a place where people can go and have the experience they mean to have. “And I don’t mean to go on there and be harassed, or receive death threats, or whatever,” he says. “We believe that it’s really important that people can go online and, like, engage and share cat pictures or yuk it up with my friends.”
Content moderation quickly emerged as the place Mozilla felt it could do some immediate good. In part because it’s a big company with lots of resources and tools for moderation and in part because it fits so squarely with the Pledge for a Healthy Internet that Mozilla published a few years ago. The Pledge’s thesis is that the internet is real life, that everyone must be able to use it and feel welcome on it, and that the internet’s job is to make life better. But also in part because content moderation really is the main product of any social network — and if you want to make social better, that’s where you have to start.

What's the status of migration between instances these days? Still only followers and such, no toot migration? Is it known if that's coming at some point?

yeah, still pretty much the same as before

but they are still trying to figure out how to do it - but no one knows how long it'll take, sadly

But they can do that as it is. even without embracing it. Using it in their own stuff is only good I think. Decentralised communication is the goal, but that means even shady shits like Meta use it.
Kind of agree. It certainly is a poke in the eye of closed social.

Plus if an instance (or series of instances) doesn’t trust Meta, just defederate it.

I do think that Meta embracing activity pub is a bit of a mixed bag.

However, I prefer to look at this glass-half-full: I think it's a sign that activitypub is actually to some degree catching on.
