I'm enjoying the full version of Humankind so far. But... it seems to have more bugs than the OpenDev version I played a while back. So far, just visual, but it's weird.

I managed to shame the Greeks into giving me an outpost they created because I saw the wonder there first, even though the land was nowhere near my territory, so that was funny. Also, despite having played Endless Space 1&2, and Endless Legend, AND Civ 5 & 6, some of the systems here are opaque to me. Plus I have no concept of the balance of the game at this point. Some jerk hired some mercenaries to cause shenanigans nearby but they weren't a match for twice as many elephant armies but that just makes sense.

Like all 4X games, the return on investment of prioritizing industry early seems very high, but maybe there are other ways to go about it.

Hmmmmmm... For some reason, Steam doesn't want to trigger Game Bar shortcuts unless I make a new shortcut for them. It's not a big deal, but why.

Do you feel like it is a lot like Endless Legend? One of my exact issues with EL was the systems felt opaque to me and it did not make me interested in exploring them further.

I know this game is 2 years late. But PLEASE give it a go.

This is an incredibly special game. Tetsuya Mizuguchi's games are designed around immersion through synesthesia, and it's a wonderful feeling.

Good headphones are must.

I "only" have about 40-50 hours in EL, I was much more into ES2, but I was still familiar with the concepts in EL (even if I couldn't always min-max them certainly). I'm actually wondering if that familiarity with the Endless games is hurting me a bit here, they have some similar terminology that actually doesn't function the same way. It's closer to EL than to Civ I'd say but it's very hybridy and does its' own thing so far as I have seen so far.

I think that maybe I should have had on the basic tutorial instead of the advanced one, too. As far as I have seen, once I find the description of something (in the in-game help wiki) I understand the concept and you can track basically everything and see how different things are affecting other things, so maybe opaque isn't the right word, because it's the initial concept and interactions I'm having trouble understanding, but once I do it's easy to see how they interlink.

As an example: territories are the same idea as in EL. You build an outpost (or, later on, can directly build a city) in one and "claim" that territory. No one else can then claim it unless you lose it or they siege it (or maybe some unknown thing I haven't encountered yet). BUT, there is territory influence conversion, which in ES2 meant you would gain control of that territory. Here, it just means it literally represents to culture of whoever has the influence on it, but the claim on the territory doesn't change, you still own it even if someone else converts them all to liking their music and TV shows and whatever. That itself has some game impact that is explained, and can even offer you advantages for having territories inside other cultures' influences.

There's a lot of stuff like that, it initially seems straightforward but then there is another layer you didn't realize until you got there. There are obviously a lot of comparisons being drawn to Civ but it's really only Civ-like on the surface of it, I think. EL had the compounding factor of all the magic stuff, every single race being rather unique, the city building system was not always clean, and a few other things. A lot of that is streamlined here and I think I like a lot of these systems better. It's really just... different. More different than I was initially expecting.

This is an awesome breakdown, thank you!

Hearing it is more its own hybrid approach is definitely intriguing. I am keeping it on the short list to check out.

Co-signing this! Tetris Effect is an absolutely amazing game, and it's a must play for anybody who hasn't already picked it up elsewhere.

The game perfectly captures that feeling of "flow" you get when you're on a roll in Lumines, and somehow makes it work perfectly in a Tetris context. Incredible OST, too.

New games coming out?

Time to reinstall Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and play through the Good campaign again to relive my youth.

Now that I am actually good at strategy games (unlike when I was 8), it turns out that the game is pretty balanced except for a few super broken spells and units. Cleared the campaign in under 350 days which I never even got close to as a kid. I was probably above 600 and that was using cheats near the end because I didn't understand supply lines or how freaking insanely strong the last guy gets.

1.1 million additional sales. 44,278 additional Steam reviews. That is a ratio of 1100 / 44.278 ~ 24.8 for the additional reviews. So a 4% chance to write a review.

If we use the numbers starting at the release date:
  • on April 1, ratio = 6800 / 203.670 ~ 33.4
  • on July 1, ratio = 7900 / 247.857 ~ 31.9

Tetris Effect took two years of exclusive money from Sony and Epic, as well as having Epic Online Service as online support.

Good for people who want to play it, me? No thanks.
Yeah, I already played it on game pass, so I’m evidently in a better position to say it, but I don’t feel like rewarding what is basically whoring out everywhere for two years before coming on the store most people use. I get that it’s business, but it was hardcore. Pretty sure if there was still any hope of some exclusive contract, maybe on this handheld with a crank, they would be on it like an hungry pack of, I don’t know, insert whatever animal that sounds funny.
Which is not an argument about the quality of the game.

Have any of you found a good routine to change passwords in all you places? Some places I havent changed password in like two decades!
If you use a password manager you can see how old the password generally is (or at least get a lower bound for the age). Changing it quickly is a tough one. I think a few commercial password managers like LastPass offer this feature for common websites. Can't speak about how well t his works as I am not using any commercial one.

Tetris Effect seems to run very well on my PC, VR or OLED would be optimal though.

Yes, I am sure that it is a good game if so many people here are excited for it. But my money only go to those who value their customers.

I use LastPass, it's usually quick and they auto generate a password for you. but you can't do it in bulk (I think?).

Yeah I already played it on Gamepass, but it does feel like buying the game on steam is just rewarding them. The publisher gets upfront money for a year or two from epic and then gets great steam/GOG etc... money afterwards. They then go 'hey, Tetris effect 2 lets do it again it's a win win".

it is my quest to beat every Final Fantasy game in order
I tried to do this about 12 years ago or so. Played the PSX versions of FF1 and FF2 to completion, then played the DS version of FF3. I was bored out of my mind just before the final dungeon of FF3 and abandoned the challenge.

But I have played through FF4, FF6, FF7 and FFX at separate points earlier.
Never had the willpower to finish FF8, FF9 and FFX-2, and I got bored of FFXIII quickly, even if I have FFXIII-2 lying around as well.

It tried too. Two times. Each time dropping the gauntlet when I finish the second one.

I also have tried this. On average I have finished 1 FF game per year but now it has been since 2020 summer for FFIV :D
Maybe some day before I am old fart I have played all of them...

I love The Tetris Effect, but the developer needs to go the extra mile to win people's trust on Steam. The amount of exclusivity deals they've taken is outstanding. Might even be a new record.

But when you do get around to it, I promise you it's an incredible experience. Whether you play in VR or on a 4KTV, the game just pops in the most incredible way.

And yes, headphones come recommended with this one.

Well, I picked up Tetris Effect despite my earlier claims that I'd be smart about it and get it cheaper. To be fair, it's at a historical low and you get part of the soundtrack :surrenderblob:

Based on Mark MacDonald's comments on Era, I get the impression the "Connected" exclusivity didn't necessarily mean it couldn't come to Steam, but they held off on it to do a simultaneous release on all other platforms. It's worded a little imprecisely, but I think that's what he meant.

Uninstalling and never bothering with the Epic Store is actually pretty general life hack when it comes to gaming.
