Omicron, Winter, people relaxing in their homes playing or checking their Steam profiles, it can be a lot of things, you know.
People realizing PCs can play games and have a lot of them.

Im serious, I seriously expect that the last 2 years, especially with the pandemic, people have discovered that PCs also have a ton of games, which leads them to discover Steam.

I think it's that they have had more time to be able to look into what games their potato laptops can play.
People always knew PCs had tons of games but didn't have the time or interest to check it out or they had a bad experience in the past. Look at Era. PC Gaming threads are a minefield of technical issues for them. I've been there too and things have improved a hell of a lot over the last few years.
There's a couple of discords i'm in where people have got into gaming on their laptop because of bigger screen over the mobile phone they usually play on. Especially with so many mobile game ports coming to PC lately.
Many people also had to upgrade their home PCs so they can work from home and are looking to see what else they can do on them.
Tons of young people own laptops for college/uni work and as they are more powerful than a few years ago and integrated chipsets are much better more people can game on them.
... and the Fortnite/Roblox/Minecraft kids growing up and expanding out of their bubbles.

Hitman 3 is where it belongs, and I say this as someone who bought Hitman 2 + the season pass at launch
Yup, I'm with you on that, I had my finger ready to buy as I said in this very thread (have hitman 1 and 2 and all dlc). The regional pricing was so bad, I could get more than two God of War games. Ended up purchasing Monster hunter Rise instead which is also cheaper.

Never thought about this. The massive amount of WFH workers who never had a gaming-capable PC could be partly responsible for some of the CCU count.
Sure, not all work PCs / Laptops would be "gaming capable" and not every worker would want or dare to game on the work PC, but there must be millions all over the world who have a gaming capable PC through WFH

Very fascinating the Hitman 3 bodge. Game should be on the top sellers on Steam but its nowhere to be seen. Eggs money was probably worth it for IOI though so doubt there will be any lessons learnt from them.

Ill definitely be thinking twice about any IOI future games though, other devs deserve my business first.

finally started playing Doom Eternal last night. Only a couple levels in but so far I'm really enjoying the changes made to the Doom 2016 formula, like the switching between flame belch, chainsaw, and glory kills instead of doing glory kills all the time, and the greatly increased emphasis on verticality and traversal both in and out of combat.

game is definitely not easy, though, don't ask me what difficulty I'm playing on

I tried that model-building sim during one of Steam’s demo events last year.

Engine performance was pretty weak. Kept cycling up my fans to the point where I just shut ‘er down.

Still love the concept though.

Gears Collection would be pretty cool. I enjoyed Gears 4 and 5, but 2, 3, and Judgment were never released on PC, and Gears 1 UE has been broken on PC for a while now and still hasn't been fixed (apparently, a Windows update a few years ago had the unfortunate side effect of capping the game's GPU utilization at around 40%)

Just wondering. Is it possible to somehow have your own cloud ? Some remote disk space where you can backup what you want, without oversight, and where you could download things from on a whim ?
Pretty sure that's a dumb question and it has been possible for years, but I'm tired.

You mean completely yours? Meaning not even rented sever kind of thing? Hmh might be doable with either a NAS or setting up a Pi server.

I'm not even sure what I'm asking. Just trying to put some comics in a 64gb ipad and I'm tired of fighting for disk space. Tired of using itunes to transfer files too. I also don't like Goodle Drive and need a solid backup solution. Then it dawned on me, in the year of our lord 2022, why do I have to rely on service providers to handle my data.

Yeah, my fucking corner on the Internet, with my data that I handle how I see fit.

Gears of War Collection Would be amazing, I beat GOW 2 on Xenia, but the 720p resolution made a less than ideal experience. I would love native PC ports of GOW 2, 3 and Judgement on Steam

I'll leave this here, it's long and rather technical at the beginnging, just a dude sitting there talking, but he hits all the important points including cryptobros shilling for NFTs and shit. Spoiler warning: It won't make you less angry about the whole situation.

Also watch his other videos, no matter the subject.
Just got around watching it. Feels crazy that it's over 2 hours long, because it just flows by.
Really, really interesting. Also I knew that crypto and NFTs suck, but holy shit they are just magnitudes worse than I ever thought possible.

I watched it over the weekend too, even though I knew 98% of this already. It's still actually pretty entertaining, but I do think the threat he proposes is bigger than reality. I really don't see a way that this failure isn't somewhat self-contained. It's that bad of a system, that even fascists couldn't force it on us.

To exclude oversight you're going to want to set up a VPN to connect to your own physical server in your own building. I guess you could also pre-encrypt your own files before you send them to whatever cloud service you want.

I didn't get the impression he was framing it as a massive threat in practice, just in theory. As you said (and he also explained very well), the underlying system is just so bad at what it's trying to do that it's unlikey to actually spill out meaningfully from its "scam-ecosystem" into the wider reality.
Thankfully.

Well it was a manner of speaking, I can tolerate a modicum of oversight. I’m not planning to host child porn or the plans to some terror attack. I just want to have a space on the Internet, for me to use as I see fit, without shitty solutions like GDrive or some fucker telling me I can’t upload this or that because some algorithm said so.

I'm pretty sure most cloud solutions are quite free in that way, Ive used both google drive, iCloud and even one drive to host all kinds of things and never had any issues,.

I've actually read that Google is searching through people's drive's for illegal stuff as a lot of people use drive to upload illegal copies of movies, games etc. and share it around.

Yeah I think any place online does that but only incase of traffic spikes, so for personal use I think it is safe, only other options is hosting a server at home.

OneDrive - We don’t support the specific character that the geniuses behind the western version of Dies Irae (VN) decided to use for the folder they put in My Documents. Henceforth, we won’t backup anything.
I don’t think I can comment without becoming extremely profane.

GoogleDrive - We hope you don’t want to use your GDrive account on the two PC in your house, because we will send a notification on your desktop every time your mother delete a file from the backup. And the ‘Don’t show me again‘ checkbox is for the lulz, don’t get your hopes up.

But this goes further than that, there is an amount of freedom lacking, I don’t know how to put it into words. Like if I want to download a comic book from the cloud on my iPad, it feels like I can, using this corp or that other corp solution. But I want ‘My Solution’.

So not going to host Zelda 64 for PC then? Disappointing.

The most shocking thing to me was this "play to earn" game Axii. Literally built on pushing people in poorer countries into system where they "play games" for like 60 hours a week to earn a living, all the while this Axxi thing is making money off of dumb whales in the West. It's like a scam, on top of worker exploitation. Modern day capitalism is such a nightmare.
