7 hours into Nightreign.

Situation/Context
  • I have researched absolutely 0 about the game and watched no media other than the first cinematic trailer (and read no articles).
  • I'm playing on a PC that should run the game at hundreds of FPS.
  • Perhaps most importantly, I'm playing with the same two people that I literally played 500+ hours of coop with over the course of DS 2-3 and ER.
Impressions
  • Tech: I thought it was completely and utterly unacceptable on a technical level at first. During the first two hours of playing, I had 5+ second frame freezes every few minutes, and pretty big drops even more often. I then installed the latest graphics drivers and rebooted my PC, and that fixed both of those things entirely. The fact that it's 60 FPS limited / 16:9 only / broken HDR is still beyond the pale, but at least it plays well within those constraints now.
  • Moment-to-moment gameplay: this is honestly fantastic so far. The movement stuff is all great, and so is the combat. I played as Recluse mostly, and the new gameplay elements and systems seem really neat, with a nice level of depth and variety. I also played one run each as Duchess and Revenant, and they are clearly all completey different gameplay experiences. Very cool.
  • Mission design: I'm split on the hard time limit and overall Apex Legends design. It certainly succeeds in making it into a completely different game at least compared to how I play any Soulslike (extremely methodical and slow). If someone were to describe it to me I'm pretty sure I'd think I'd hate it. But I don't.
  • Meta-progression: I'm not completely sold on that. A lot of the relics you find are completely useless for your playstyle, or just very minor stat tweaks. I hope there's more to it than that.
  • Story: I actually really enjoy it so far. It's silly and grimdark and the Duchess intro scene is straight up shonen trope material, but it's fun.

Do I want to play another 7 hours ASAP? Yes.
But honestly, they'd have had to majorly mess up something that's a self-described co-op-focused action Soulslike thing for me to not like it.

[I was about to post this in the previous thread but couldn't. Thanks for the new thread!]

Hmm... this is probably the quietest month for me so far in 2025, but there are still a few things that I'm interested in (Raidou because I never played it, and Gex depending on nostalgia)
The previous months were quite big honestly so a little pause from spending isn't so bad after all until the summer sale starts at least

Thanks for the thread, lash!

June is always the most exciting month in gaming. All the showcase + Switch 2 launch will be very interesting to watch. I decided to wait for more games coming to Switch 2 before getting one. Going to focus on Steam Deck for the next few months.

Also, I had completely forgotten that summer sale is coming. :cold-sweat:

Great OP, thanks

Alters looks interesting and I am curious about how much of a shitshow Mindseye is gonna be.
I just finished TLOUP1 on PC, it was just great, I am glad they made the remake (and published it on PC).
Also started TLOUP2 today, just made it to Seattle (so past the point of controversy, which was indeed brutal). Loving it so far and would like to play more, but I am going to Belgium for a week (business trip) which is both exciting and annoying (last time I was there was 2016). I could install it on my Deck but TLOUP games deserve big screen so..I probably won't.
June already, bah. Half the year gone.

Thanks for great thread as always lashman

This is gonna be a weird month for me. I'm leaving on vacation to Europe soon so will be away from my PC most of the month. I have my phone so I'll be around a bit but not as much as usual. Probably no purchases for me.

I've got Jeanne d'Arc loaded on my PSP emu, and tons of books and podcasts.

Then I'll probably play CO:E33 when I get back.

New thread ! Yeah ! :highfiveblob:

I will have to think long and hard about my Switch 2 pre-order very soon. I loved the first one but as a PC player first there are only two games announced for it, really. It’s a little light.
And having suffered from unexpected repair bills that amount to basically the price of the console, I could use a pause in the money drain.

I've been testing the official release of the GeoForceNow app on the Deck and...

Yea its really fucking good. They released it a few days ago. I've tested 2 games with the free tier so far in Expedition 33 and Starfield.

Both ran incredibly well wtf. I've even beaten the first big boss in Expedition 33 before you leave to the over map and yea I missed some parries/dodges but it wasn't because of lag as there was none if I'm being honest. It was more me getting used to the moves animation from this boss if anything. And Starfield is great too. Ran around my ship and that last DLC area. Loaded an older save file from Jemison and it was great. There was a minor blurry hiccup but you can really pass it off as a regular Bethesda game experience.

I probably sound like a boomer but seeing these newer AAA games running so good on the small Deck screen really is mindblowing. Because they aren't supposed to look that good. The close up conversations in Starfield especially look damn good on the Deck screen.

Its even more incredible because Starfield is basically unplayable on Deck unless you run around in a small instanced area like your ship at low settings. And Expedition 33 defaults all settings to low when playing on Deck and doesn't even let you change settings. So its a very blurry low res 30fps experience. But on GForceNow its like a next gen experience lol. Its really incredible how fast this streaming tech is progressing. The industry really is becoming unrecognizable.

I wanted to try Oblivion remastered on it but its not available on the free tier as the minimum requirements for the game are higher than the free rig they give you. Makes sense I guess but still sounds like some bullshit collusion and a reason why devs force RTX shit into the game as default. heh but in all seriousness I don't think Nvidia makes enough money with this service to warrant this type of collusion. At least not yet.

But yea overall an incredible first experience. And setting the app on deck was very simple. Watching a few minutes of ads isn't the end of the world and the 1 hour gaming session sucks but probably the norm for most people these days.

The fact that your deck is running a basic app gives you all the battery life too. So 5hrs+ of being able to stream what is basically a damn near identical experience with much better graphics in this case. I believe the free tier gives you like a 3XXX series card without RTX. But that is still essentially turning your Deck into a powerful asf mini streaming portable PC. Compare that to not even being able to run newer AAA games and if you do its with shitty low settings and 90 minute battery life. So yea this was amazing and tech like this really does extend the life of the Deck by years if not an entire decade.

I strongly recommend you guys try it. Especially if you have a Deck with a big Steam library or you own non SteamOS PC handheld.

I wasn't expecting the Deck WiFi to hold such a good experience too. And I was like anywhere from 10-30 feet away from my home router at all times too. The Deck 2 is gonna be a killer device for this as well with a 1080p screen. Games will look even better.

If I was Nintendo I would get the Switch 2 to somehow run this app. So Switch owners can basically get all the goodness from 5 PC launchers along with their exclusives. Its a no brainer but Nintendo is hardheaded asf so they probably won't allow it.

You know it occurs to me that the OP template could use updating since it still recommends using steamgifts as a giveaway tool.
Poor baby Mona .
:toucan:

======

Really really really really curious about The Alters. I'm digging what I've seen (didn't play the demo though) and I hope they nail it.

Also very curious how FBC: Firebreak does, mainly because I liked Control and I'd like Remedy to stay in business. 🇫🇮
No interest in actually playing it though, and I feel like that's a prevalent sentiment around the internets.

Yeah, I think the aim is for Remedy get a foothold in the live service market. I am not sure they are aiming for the same audience that plays their single player games. I assume this is funded by outside investors, so even if it flops, it's not Remedy actually losing money.

Hmm, let me correct myself, there aren’t two games announced for switch 2 but three if we count Bravely Default, which I thought was multi platform.
Well, that’s that. Probably a temporary exclusive of a game that is not universally loved.

Huh, I didn't realize Forgotton Anne is getting a sequel.

I've been playing Forgotton Anne a bit here and there and while it certainly looks and sounds nice and the premise has potential, the writing has been... not great. Very predictable, not very engaging. I should finish it, I imagine I don't have that long to go.
So I'm very surprised that it's getting a sequel and that it's actually out this month. Looks like they have had demos in fests but I guess it completely flew past me.

BD is coming to Steam for sure. BD2 is already there, so why would they not drop BD1 remaster/remake there? I doubt Nintendo is paying them a cent for 3DS era JRPG.
