March already! Thanks for the new thread lashman, it's great as usual!

This month has started great for me personally:

  • my appartement was sold today for a lot more money than we expected
  • all documents for our new house are signed, we're moving in September
  • I finally got new medication for my migraine, which could lower the attacks by half
  • I'm replaying XCOM with the WOTC expansion on veteran difficulty and I'm having a blast!

So yeah, let's hope the rest of the month will be great as well.
Congrats! Great stuff on all fronts.

My month doesn't compare. Just some games and controllers lol. I have some good interviews coming this month though. Most relevant here. :evilblob:

I need someone physically with me before I can even remotely use Linux heh..

And I know nobody.

It's basically a meme at this point but the reality is that it's never been easier to use linux than it is today. There's tons of newbie friendly distros and the installation process is painless, the only techy thing they ask you to do is disable secure boot in bios.
The whole FOSS thing that's a while to get used to, I'm not going to lie, and there aren't replacements for every proprietary app that requires windows but if your use case is gaming there's nothing missing on this side tbh.

Sony Group Corp. no longer plans to release its big PlayStation 5 games on PC, a major shift in strategy that sees the video-game maker returning to console exclusivity after six years of flirting with multi-platform releases, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

Online games such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon will still be released across multiple platforms, but single-player titles such as last year’s samurai hit Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming action game Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to talk publicly about the company’s strategy.

The people cautioned that things could change in the future due to the unpredictable nature of the video-game industry and that Sony’s plans are constantly shifting. But in recent weeks PlayStation scrapped plans to bring Ghost of Yotei and other internally developed games to PC. Two games made by external developers but published by PlayStation, Death Stranding 2 and the upcoming Kena: Scars of Kosmora, are still planned for release on PC this year.

A spokesperson for PlayStation declined to comment.

There are likely a few reasons behind this shift. One is that several recent PlayStation games have not sold well on PC. A faction within PlayStation has also expressed concern that releasing their games on PC risks damaging the console’s brand and will hurt sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors, according to the people familiar with Sony’s inner workings.

For decades, Sony’s tactic for selling PlayStations was to keep tentpole franchises exclusive to its own consoles. In 2020, it pivoted and began bringing games to personal computers via Steam. Since then, the company has put most of its biggest franchises on PC, such as God of War and The Last of Us.

But the strategy has been muddled and confused many players. Most PC releases arrived months or years after the games came to PlayStation. The cadence was never consistent, and the announcements appeared to be haphazard. The company also upset PC players by asking them to create PlayStation Network accounts to access many of the games.

Now, Sony is looking to take a more straightforward approach: going back to console exclusives.

Sony’s two rivals in the console space have taken different paths. Nintendo Co. has released almost all of its games solely on its own Switch hardware, while Microsoft Corp. has turned into a multi-platform publisher, releasing everything on PC and many games on PlayStation.

Another factor behind Sony’s pivot may be Microsoft’s next Xbox, which is rumored to use Windows and be capable of playing PC games. Some executives at PlayStation may not be thrilled at the prospect of one of the company’s flagship games like God of War running on the next Xbox console.

I have to wonder how much of a role this played. Ever since Microsoft started putting games on Playstation and rumors started going around that the next Xbox would just be a Windows PC, I've been wondering if Sony would keep porting games to PC in those circumstances. Honestly, if they're stopping PC releases (even in part) just to avoid their games being playable on Xbox while simultaneously benefitting from Xbox releases on their platform, I mean, sweet fucking christ, what a dogshit company lmao.

It does not surprise me Sony could pull back from PC, at least on the single player side.

I think they envisioned a very different future for themselves where they were releasing a bunch of live service games that would be successful and these could fund prestige SP titles. Porting these SP games over to PC for extra sales would be icing on the cake. Now that most of their GaaS plans are dead. They suddenly have little output and internally the need to restructure their strategy. With how long games are taking to be made these days, their gap in output is going to take the rest of the generation to improve so hitting pause is expected.

That said, I think there is still a lot of questions about their plans for third-party Sony published, but I assume these are status quo.

Sony execs must have really believed that putting games on pc was like an entry pass to the PS ecosystem, so the 'natural' next step is to buy their hardware and play there from then on. What a bunch of morons! :ROFLMAO:

Tobey Maguire Lol GIF
To be honest, I think they believed they had a chance to expand their ecosystem to PC and have a PS Store competing with Steam, GOG and EGS.

The rowback of PS login on PC was the end of that dream.

They’re back focussing on hardware. Seems very silly given the climate we’re in right now, so I’m going to enjoy watching them fail.

From Sony's perspective they're no longer fighting against just Nintendo and Microsoft to sell the most hardware, but also the likes of Valve to keep users in their ecosystem. Even if you don't care for Sony's cinematic third-person titles, it is a differentiator to Steam just like how Valve's games are a big selling point for that platform.

I'll repost what I said on Era:

Based on the information provided in the article, about a faction inside Sony being against ports and about the possibility of this strategy changing, I think Sony is running an experiment. They gave PC gamers a taste of their singleplayer exclusives, now they can stop the ports and see if it results in increased console sales from people who want to play the sequels of those games. If console sales increase then they can continue on with this strategy, if they don't then they could always resume porting if they want to.

Sony-PC.png

So, all it takes is a single bomb and things will go back to how they were before?
I remain with my previous theory: Sony got spooked after DS2 sold way less than it's predecessor, and it's afraid this happened because people were just waiting for a pc release, instead of because maybe not everyone liked the first game, or not everyone liked having to pay 80€ for it
And I'll also repeat the part where I speculate all of this is coming out now (but not officially from Sony, because as the article says things can change, and most of the "reasoning" is speculative) it's because Saros is not doing so hot either, so they keep hammering the whole "trust us, this one is exclusive forever, promise". But just like DS1 Returnal was also a "different" game which may not be for everyone's taste, so Saros doing worse is perfectly normal
I'll just post what I wrote on ERA a few days ago for why I think this plan is not exactly well though
Personally, I think it's a bit too late
PC user interested in Horizon? Can buy and play Zero Dawn (2 versions of it even), Forbidden West and Lego (and the upcoming Hunters)
PC user interested in new/Norse God of War? Both games are available. The Greek Saga remakes don't even have a release date and Son of Sparta is a game by a "2nd party" and those could still come (but I'm not losing any sleep if it never comes honestly). The upcoming "it's not GoW but it's also GoW" doesn't even have a screenshot so it's impossible to comment on its quality or potential interest
PC user interested in Naughty Dog? Last of Us Part I & II are here, and also Uncharted 4 + the standalone expansion. Uncharted 1-2-3 are not available natively on PS5 so it's obvious they would never be considered for PC. And Intergalactic doesn't have a release date
PC user interested in Marvel? SM1, Miles Morales and 2 are available. Wolverine may never come, but it's also not Spiderman so who knows if people hooked on SM will lose sleep over it. PC also has Ratchet Rift Apart (for the older ones it's like the old Uncharted so no chance of getting pc ports since the start)
There is also Stellar Blade, but I think the devs made it clear the sequel will also come to PC, especially considering the target audience (like China, or Korea) greatly favors PC over consoles
If we're counting Stellar Blade then we might as well count Death Stranding, and 2 is coming this month. Future Kojima titles have nothing more than a title so it's too early to see if pc users will be interested in them
PC user interested in Tsushima? Now this is the first case of disappointment since Yotei may never come. Same for fans of Returnal with Saros
Then there are others like Days gone, Until Dawn, Sackboy, and honestly I'm not sure sequels to those games will ever happen at this point
I gave up on Demon souls, Gran Turismo and Astrobot to ever come. The ship sailed way before last year looking at the timing, same for most of their PS4/Vita or even earlier catalogue like Gravity Rush. And even then Bamco gave me Patapon which personally it's something I really wanted to play on pc so missing on something else isn't that bad for me

So tl;dr I think abandoning pc would have made more sense if sequels like Forbidden West, Ragnarok, tLoU P2 and SM2 never came on PC, but as it is now there are too many titles (and direct story sequels) available for most pc users to care. They have enough "fruits" on their platter to care about the upcoming "grapes", just as how Steam users didn't lose sleep over Ubisoft abandoning Steam years ago, or EGS esclusives
And who knows, maybe some of those grapes could still release at a later time. It's supposed to be a "case by case" basis after all. So honestly I don't think most will care since it was a "case by case" before too

I'm PC exclusive and the only Sony game I picked up on Steam is Death Stranding 1. So I guess you can say I'm not their target demo.

While I get wanting to lock people into your ecosystem, it will always be funny to see big pubs shrink their userbase on purpose by offering less options.

Wishing you the best, Sony!

It's likely SAO.
Bandai Namco's JP youtube has an upcoming premiere too, the description says something about a mass abduction and story from a young girl that survived, that kinda sounds like the players that got stuck in the game? Though in this case, from the perspective of a new character, maybe?

This together with the teaser that Bandai Namco EU posted on twitter, the far away tower in the screenshot kinda resembles a SAO tower?

It could still be something different, a new IP or another franchise, but...

It looks like the game's actually handling display sizes correctly, which is a nice improvement from Capcom's previous emulation collections that I've tried. The MMBN collections had a fixed 1080p internal res, so it's nigh-impossible to get crisp integer scaling on the Steam Deck or at other resolutions like 1440p.

You're giving them too much credit. Remember this is a company that seriously thought they could make 12 GaaS games and have all of them running at the same time.

Considering sony releases like one game a decade, I guess we wont miss much.

But still a shame, still think one should be able to play the games they want on whichever device they want
All the gaming grifters and console warriors would dog pile you for saying this. It's asinine how some people have brainwashed themselves into thinking exclusivity is a good thing. All the excuses for it such as "protecting the identity of the console" or "this is how it always was" are infantile.

Edit: In Schrerier's article it mentioned the that Sony's plan are still in flux. I pretty much expect this will pan out like it did with Ubisoft and EA when they decided to publish their games on their own launchers only for them to eventually return to Steam.

Why would PC gamers reward them when they come crawling back with overpriced year late bad ports again under this scenario though?

If it didn't mean job losses I'd root for their live service games to flop too on PC.

I don't really see it as rewarding or punishing, for me it's just a transaction. If they make something interesting available I will consider buying it, if not I obviously won't.

The fun part is now that I have no idea when or if I will ever got Yotei and Saros. Im just not enough interested in those games or playing my PS5 itself enough to pay 83$ for them. But I'll see, for Saros it depends on reviews and if a retailer has it cheaper on launch day (happens sometimes).
