So recap from yesterday (I'm in my annual 'I want to see TV stuff' period) ((which is annoyingly also when the heat is cooking us alive))
The Twillight Zone S01E24-25
It's the Twillight Zone ! It aged noticeably, but it's still the GOAT ! I just encountered one dud for now, preachy formulaic predictable episode about the dangers of gambling, but the rest still has it.
4/5
Renfield
It's not even bad enough to be terrible. It's mediocre. After a painful first part, it cruises to the finish line in a watchable sort of way. It has some moments, but they are rare. I don't like gore and I must say that unfortunately the best parts were the over the top gory / comedic fight scenes. That says a lot about the movie as a whole.
You can watch it, no one will throw rocks at you, you will even earn quite a stash of brownie points from the nerdier part of the internet for the Nicolas Cage factor, but, when all is said and done, we can all agree that you spectacularly failed your movie selection.
It happens, there are far worse movies, it's just mediocre.
1/5
Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves
I hated the movie from the start, and a quick soul searching is pointing to how frantic the whole thing is. The movie is obviously incapable to let in any breathing room in its storytelling. It feels more like a checklist, of essential narrative moments, of jokes, of nerdy wink wink call-backs, than a real movie, with breathing, living moments. It's HYPER as fuck.
And while I could easily feel offended, after all the movie is clearly terrified of any downtime, treating its audience as a bunch of morons who MUST be entertained AT ALL TIME, the worst part is that it hurts itself in the process. Very difficult to give a fuck about any character at the breakneck speed everything is happening at.
Not a fan of Chris Pine or the lovable scoundrel trope. Not sure if it's just tired or if Pine didn't have the chops to pull it, but yeah, he was one of the weakest characters.
Entertaining when it finds its footing and you let go of your hopes to see a movie and not a circus attraction.
2-3/5
Wellington Paranormal S01E01-02
More of 'What we do in the Shadows' (Movie) in TV Show form. You should know what to expect. It's incredibly dumb and at the same time, mostly really funny. The actors are perfect. The risk is evident, not easy to pull off that level of dumb but funny on an episode basis, and yeah, the second one felt more dumb than amusing, not as tight as the first. But it's still a show I expect to finish and my spotlight of the day.
It knows what it wants to do and mostly achieves it. It's fucking moronic, but it's the point and it's fun.
