its so interesting with this band, people seem to love the stuff by them that I dont enjoy so much. I really liked the "
The Centre wont hold" album, but when I listened to their other stuff, I was less impressed. Dunno
One of my favourites by them is this:
SleaterโKinney โ "The Future is here" (from "The Centre wont hold", 2019)
but really, the whole album is excellent.

For some reason, I listened to
Nick Drake again last night. What a singer-songwriter. Not exactly new, but if you dont know him yet, give him a listen. He only released three albums in the 70s and died early. His first two albums had more lush instrumentation โ like a whole mini-orchestra playing along his singing + guitar playing, the third album was much more stripped back but, I think, more beautiful:
ยท
Nick Drake โ "Pink Moon" (complete third album, 1972)
ยท
Nick Drake โ "Time has told me" (from "Five Leaves Left", 1970)
ยท
Nick Drave โ "Hazy Jane Part II" (from "Bryter Layter", 1971)

and speaking of Nicks โฆ
Nick Caves last few albums really left me wanting. I hope he will eventually return to music I find interesting. Nothing more offensive than boring music (in my opinion). And Ambient is just just incredibly boring to me.
The album "Ghosteen" is especially jarring to me, I found it lacking pretty much anything to hook me, but critics and fans seemed to love it.
It sticks out to me that Nick Cave commented he removed the drums because they "anchored" the songs down...but I disagree completely. There is a section in the title track where there are some drums, and they instantly make it SO much better (but then again, ask me, I would add drums to everything, basically)
ยท
"Ghosteen", several minutes in (link with timestamp...and even then the drums are
really quiet and buried in the mix)
in contrast one of my favourite Nick Cave songs:
"Red Right Hand" (from "Let Love In", 1994)

Radiohead recently released "
Kid A mnesia", a collection of their 2000โ01 albums, but the interesting part here is the bonus disc. It includes the track "Follow me around" that was a fan favourite back then but has gone unreleased until now.
They've done this to a few of their songs. Played them live, people loved them, but then they didnt release them - or took ages to release them, often in dramatically altered versions. I usually prefer the old/original/early versions, since Radiohead work their songs to death, sometimes really to their detriment. Especially between 1996 and 2000 there were a few beautiful songs that couldve been massive hits if they had released them. Some include:
ยท The aforementioned "
Follow me around" has been around since the late 90s and has only now been released. People even made a website petitioning for the songs release.
Radiohead โ Follow me around (from "Kid A mnesia")
ยท "
Lift" has also been around since ~1996, it was finally released in 2017 on the OK Computer re-release. Last year there was a OK Computer sessions release named "MiniDisc (Hacked)" that included a version that was even better. That same "MiniDisc" release also contained plenty of songs-in-progress that showed how Radiohead develop songs, it was really quite something.
Radiohead โ Lift (from "OK Computer" re-release)
Radiohead โ Lift (alternate mix from "MiniDisc (Hacked)")
ยท "
Man of War" (released in 2017), also stems from 1997 or so, fan favourite, played occassionally, but never released until the OKC re-release. Beautiful song reminiscent of a James Bond theme song (they actually submitted it for the JB film "Spectre" in 2015, but it was rejected โ it wasnt written for the film and therefore ineligible for awards... shows how much film makers care about artistry vs awards, eh?)
Radiohead โ Man of War (from "OK Computer" re-release)
ยท "
Nude" (released in a new version in 2007) also from 1997, and the released version lacks some of the magic, for me at least.
Radiohead โ Big Ideas/Nude (early version probably from the late 90s)
Radiohead โ Nude (studio version from "In Rainbows", 2007)
ยท "
True Love Waits": from around 1995 I think โ released as a live version in 2001 and then as a new studio version in 2016. "Kid A mnesia" has a version of it as well that shows just how destructive they went about with their most beautiful songs: I think they were afraid of their most beautiful songs to a degree and chose to deconstruct them instead, either transforming them or making them stripped back as much as they could.
Radiohead โ True Love Waits (a full band version from the mid-90s, from "MiniDisc (hacked)")
Radiohead โ True Love Waits (live 2001 โ Thom York solo on acoustic guitar, from "I Might Be Wrong โ Live Recordings")
Radiohead โ True Love Waits (studio version from 2016, found on "A Moon Shaped Pool")
Radiohead โ True Love Waits ("Pulk/Pull"-version from "Kid A mnesia": this experiment led to a whole other song....)
Radiohead โ Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors (...this one! from the album "Amnesiac", 2001)

There's a lot more I could probably write about but I think I rambled enough.
