I only watched the first episode all the way through. I'm not familiar with the source material.
I was turned off by the characters and parts of the concept.
I like the idea of someone being reborn and then using that second chance at life to avenge someones else's murder, but I dislike the background that the author chose to tell this story against. It felt creepy. There's a scene where a nurse who accuses the main character (a doctor) of being a "lolicon" asks him if he would turn down the love interest of Ai (who is 16 years old at the time and would become his patient a scene later) if she were to ask him out, and the dude just blushes at the question and evades answering her. He's not a lolicon, but can't answer if he would turn down the advances of 16 year old? Wtf
Other than that I just disliked many of the scenes played out in that episode. The main character irrationally chasing down a stalker into the woods at night just because the stalker was asking him questions about Ai was pretty ridiculous. There's also that scene at the end were Ai goes into a long monologue about lies while she's bleeding to death and her killer is standing in front of her and her son with a knife. It's just a weird scene to watch because you would think she would be more focused on protecting her son rather than going into a long spiel about her idol life and the lies she had to create about herself.
You made some fair point. Japanese idol fandom certainly had a certain parasocial tendencies among many older fans, especially among men. I think the distinction we can observe from the limited time we saw of Gorou's old life is that he tends to be on the "healhtier" side of the fandom. From my point of view, Gorou had never really thought about having an actual, physical relationship with his idol, hence his silence.
I think the desire to support and protect his idol ultimately cost him his life. Fandom can make people do some irrational things, and what Gorou did was no exception. And about the scene before the time skip, I agree that it is a bit melodramatic. However, I think Ai was trying to get the full attention of her attacker, so that he won't try to attack Aqua right behind her, or Ruby behind the foyer door. The ensuing farewell scene was a turning point in Aqua and Ruby's life, though. It very well does justice to the source material.
I think the main draw of Oshi no Ko is that it's not a simple revenge tale. There's already one too many isekai titles that does that. But if you're willing to consider following the series again, I think you'll find that Oshi no Ko is about the nature of hope and dreams, and what we as humans are willing to do to achieve it. After all, believing in dreams is what idol fandom is all about.
I’m late to starting this season but have watched a few premiere episodes to try things out
In short I have so far watched:
Hell’s Paradise = this has definitely got my attention
Skip and Loafer = this has also definitely got my attention
Mashle = not sure, it has potential
Heavenly Delusion = struggled to grab me
Insomniacs After School = also struggled to grab me
I’ll give Mashle, Heavenly Delusion, and Insomniacs another episode or two but they could be potentially dropped.
And I’m still meaning to getting to watching Gundam Mercury S2 and Oshi No Ko.
I think Insomiacs is a very faithful adaptation of the manga. I'm not sure whether you're familiar with the source material, but the manga is an exercise in subtlety. The unspoken intimacy between Isaki and Ganta without being overtly saccharine is the main draw of the manga, and in the anime adaptation, Liden Films had set out to do just that, and I think they've succeeded. It's still very much a mood piece that didn't rely too much on anime tropes commonly found in the other of its contemporaries, such as Komi-san or Nagatoro. I certainly enjoyed Insomniacs more.
I picked up a Galaxy Tab S8+ and it's beautiful. Love to watch anime and read manga on it. But with the manga specifically i worry a bit about burn-in? The screen is AMOLED, anyone here have experience with manga on an OLED? Due to the nature of OLED the black and white style of manga really sticks out on it, but at the same time i fear long periods of this high contrast ratio might damage the screen or cause burn-in.

One thing I didn't like is Samsung's bloatware that I need to remove with every major update of the OS. But other than that, it's simply the best Android tablet you can buy since Sony exited the tablet market.

I agree about the bloatware... Spent the first hour or so updating and uninstalling everything i reasonably could.
It's a beautiful tablet so I hope it lasts me the whole 4-5 years of promised software updates.

I HATE Mirai Nikki with a passion cuz no, the protagonist will forever remain the single most bland piece of milquetoast possible, who does nothing at all to ever deserve anything let alone this type of obsessed yandere GF.
That said, it is an entertaining show and the OP's all slap hard af.

Well that's disappointing to hear. Seems like a love it or hate it kinda anime. I wouldn't say I hate it, I just think it's edgy without justifying it. And unlike there doesn't seem to be much character growth. People keep comparing the protag of Mirai Nikki to Shinji, but i just don't see it... This anime isn't even close to EVA.

I'm going to list the things that came out since a couple of years ago that I have liked and are popular-ish with some links so you can read the synopsis.
-Shonen-> Ranking of Kings: Really charming, season 2 is due soon. (Ousama Ranking) Vinland Saga: Vikings in America, well, sorta. Be aware it's not your typical shonen, if you expect a traditional "all fighting" shonen then season 2 is going to leave you really upset. (Vinland Saga) and Jujutsu Kaisen (Jujutsu Kaisen)
-Isekai -> Lately there has been an incredible boom in isekai and I honestly wouldn't know where to start as I haven't seen them all, some are good and/or fun while many others are quite generic or rely on a single gimmick that wears out pretty quickly. What people seem to like right now is Overlord, Konosuba and That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime which are still getting sequels/spin offs to this day, if you already watched those honestly just look around and try to find one with a gimmick you find fun or interested in.
For something more recent try Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu)
-Weird shit -> Pick Golden Kamuy and its sequels, those are fun! (Golden Kamuy) then maybe try Dorohedoro (Dorohedoro) or Odd Taxi (Odd Taxi)
-I don't know where to put this but Summertime Render (Summertime Render)
-Sports -> I never got that much into it but Blue Lock is pretty huge right now (Blue Lock)

Went through my Anilist, here's some of what I highly enjoyed from the last 3 years. (Though I'm not super up-to-date with current stuff either).
From oldest to newest:
ID: INVADED: Strong sci-fi mystery thriller with really cool visuals and set-pieces. Dorohedoro: If madness were to be given a name, it would perhaps be Dorohedoro. Super unique and fascinating (and gory but not really?). DECA-DENCE: Post-apocalyptic with a dash of mecha and strong themes. Akudama Drive: A wild cyperpunk-ish ride from the Danganronpa writer BACK ARROW: The start is a bit slow but it is distilled Super-Robot goodness that continues to escalate over and over and it's great. Possibly the closest we've gotten to a modern Gurren Lagann. SSSS.DYNAZENON: The successor to SSSS.GRIDMAN. More hype super-robot goodness. 86 EIGHTY-SIX: Sci-Fi/Action/Mech/Drama with very strong direction Sonny Boy: Probably best described with this quite from an ANN writer: "Right now, I feel the best description of it is a (relatively) cohesive animated smorgasbord of philosophical thought experiments presented via deadpan psychedelia." Really unique. Sabikui Bisco: Post-apocalyptic action show with a fascinating setting starring copious amounts of shrooms and other weird things. Really strong on all fronts. BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls' Story-: Hot-blooded over-the-top golfing action. It's amazing. Season 2 running right now (haven't watched that yet though). Bocchi The Rock: Super fun Slice-of-life/comedy/music show. Positively hilarious, very creative animation and good songs.

(VS/Planetes spoilers) When I read the Farmland arc for the first time, I thought Thorfinn is an analogue of an American war veteran who came back stateside with a healthy dosage of PTSD and no useful skillsets other than killing. The loss of purpose and the existential crisis he faced is similar to what Hachimaki in Planetes had suffered, so most manga readers who read VS for the “battles” has never read Planetes before.

I've been reading the series for like 15 years, I think people mostly hated that it took so long in publication. The arc must have taken like 4 or 5 years. This is coming off a non-stop action arcs before it. But it is a very important arc for Thorfinn, and I'm glad that it might be redeemed in the eyes of many in anime form.
I cannot believe how many times this dumb ass protagonist has survived game over just because plot armor. How many times has someone else had him at gunpoint, or had his cellphone in their possession and they dick around or play games instead of ending him...
This has to be one of the most egregious cases of """villians""" who like to play with their food only to end up dying themselves.
The writing for this show is sooooo shit. But it's almost over so I'll stick with it until the end.

Started Chainsaw Man manga Part 2 thanks to Hektor
Blitzed 10 chapters already, Not much to comment on atm, seems like more of the same. (And that's not a bad thing.) Character setup so far is pretty good, but knowing how part 1 went, I can't help but have anxiety over who is going to die at any moment lol.
I don't really have a lot to say about it. For me personally, it just relied far too heavily on people doing things for dramatic effect rather than sound reasoning or logic. It's a type of story telling I haven't ever liked.
I started a new series, Management of a Novice Alchemist.
To put it in a simple term, it's Atelier: the anime. But without the involvement of GUST in its production committee. The premise is comfy enough, with our lovable protagonist trying her best to run a rural alchemy store whilst making her town prosper in the process. The difference here being, our protagonist is already hyper-competent, and she was able to overcome adversity without spending too much effort.
Add to that a bunch of loveable friends and anime hi jinks, and that result in pretty much a decent palate cleanser after watching Vinland Saga or Tengoku Daimakyou.

Speaking of Tengoku Daimakyou, the last two episodes are going to be interesting. The way the story unravelled in the manga marks a monumental turning point for our characters. Exciting times.
Dropped Tokyo Ghoul anime in favor of reading the manga. Same with Tanya. Pretty much all the reviews for both recommend Manga over anime, and especially note that TG was done dirty.
... So instead I watched Akudama Drive and it was amazing! I ended up binging it. Definitely up there with modern seinen GOAT's like Psycho Pass and Edgerunners.
Also it didn't hit me until after, but it's from the creator of Danganronpa and man did a lot of things "click" once i figured that out.

This one is pretty cool. Fantasy setting from the start, no isekai. Amazing art. Slow story, but nice characterization at least.
It's weird because A-1 Pictures has continued work on every other animation project they have. Fate/Strange Fake is still scheduled to release this season on time.

Haven't been watching much anime for a while, but yesterday I took a look at what recent stuff there was and got intrigued by Dead Mount Death Play.
Ended up binging the whole thing, lol.
It's really good. A reverse Isekai by the Durarara guy. Which means a big ensamble cast of fun/crazy characters with many plot-threads and organizations moving simultaneously but somehow a bigger mystery all ties it together. Really good stuff.
Only complaint I have is that the season ending was a bit of a let down. Lots of buildup but in the end it was just mostly... more buildup for the 2nd cour later this year.

The current season of anime, I think Undead Girl Murder Farce is the biggest surprise of the season for me, a few of the episodes made me go "no way, it's already ending?", they felt short despite being regular length episodes. xD
It's kind of a sleeper hit, at least to me. I enjoyed this hodgepodge of English fiction and detective story. Other people are mostly watching Mushoku Tensei this season and not much else.
