To anyone else who had their payment stuck on pending, I got a reply from Steam support:
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and we appreciate the interest in our Steam Deck.

We can indeed see that you were able to make the payment successfully.

Our users' places in the queue is determined by when the payments were completed. We apologize for the possible delay these errors may have caused, though unfortunately, Steam Support can't make adjustments to reservation priority. However, rest assured you have a place in line for the Steam Deck.
See you all in 2022 :crying-face:

I hope there's an option for changing to a different model down the road. I ended up reserving the 512GB, though I'm not sure if I need 512GB. I could probably make make do with the 256GB.

Yeah, i wondered about that but then decided that if it's not turning up until Q3 2022 then i have the time to save the cash! :D
I'm sure for convenience sake having 512GB and non-reflective screen will be worth it in the end.

I didn't pay as much attention as others for getting reseveations in... yet somehow on the first attempt after 1 refresh of the Steam page, I was able to get my reservation processed and confirmed in less than a minute... so my reserevation time is the same time they opened reservations.
I saw the link to check reservation position before it was taken down.. I'm apparently no.30 in the queue for UK.

My free time is not so great these days, but if it ends up shipping to me on time, I'll pass impressions and test whatever I can on request

I went with a 64GB model maybe optimistically after the information about the slot being present. I’m fine opening and working around stuff like this generally. The biggest reason was probably because even though I was ready at opening bell (10am PST) it took me an hour and a half to put in an order on the 256GB model due to technical issues and I was slated for Q2 at that point. The 64 was either at launch or Q1. My primary usage is going to be indies and streaming games anyway. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite me too much though.

I'd look to get one of the M2 2230 drives ASAP as i reckon they'll be the next thing scalpers go for and it's not like there's a ton of them easily available anyway, not in the UK at least. They're the same drives as are used in the Surface Pro i think so it might be worth looking under that name too.

Want to make sure we even can install them first. I know they said there's a slot, but we may find it's next to impossible to do a teardown.

I wonder if Steam Deck will lead to greater adoption of native Steam Input. It's a shame that only a handful of games support it.
like on one hand i love what steaminput is doing but on other hand some devs just go to implment steaminput and for some reason remove xinput support after that
... which then causes other problems unless you play all in BMP

I don't think supporting native SteamInput requires in anyway to remove Xinput support. I know of only one game that did this, Prey, and it's a baffling choice when it could be restored easily via a fan mod. Besides, they didn't even implement the native SteamInput well, with camera controls on controllers being really imprecise after their update.

Hmm...
How does achievement unlocking work in offline mode. Does Steam remember when the achievements were unlocked while offline?
Thankfully Record of Lodoss has an achievement just for starting the game that I hadn't gotten yet. For that game at least, the achievement popped when I was in offline mode and it also showed in the library view, but Steam registered the time I earned it as the moment I returned to "online" mode.

So as expected, the markup from resellers over here are crazy. $700 for the 256GB model and $1000 for the 512GB.
And they seem to be selling too. I'm assuming it must be people from regions not supported by Valve.
Alternatively,it could be about getting the launch batch of SteamDecks, so reservations that still receive it in December 2021.
Those are the only two cases where I could see people willing to pay such a huge markup.

Not a fan of this, but it does suggest there's a huge demand for the SteamDeck.

it doesnt requrie it and yet so many did it for some strange reason .... for example the high profile one Horizon: Zero Dawn , where EGS and GoG have xinput supported , but steam version is steaminput only

Yeah, they're definitely selling. I've been thinking about ordering one myself for that price, but I need to sell my PC first.

The first option could make sense for oil countries where the Steam Deck is not being sold and where there are some wealthy people swimming in oil money pools. I know it is the case for Norway (no reservation of Steam Deck there) thanks to fantomena. I don't know about the other countries listed in the table below

I think the second options should cover most of the resellers:
  1. some early-bird people were able to order the Steam Decks, and they are not willing to resell it,
  2. late potential buyers have to bid high in order to convince the early-birds to accept to resell it.
This shows that there is a tremendous hype for the Deck, with an extremely high demand with respect to the supply.

Was checking on any shipping fees for Steam Deck (UK), as well as for UK Brexit related fees (customs / courier etc).
Looks like there are no shipping costs and no hidden charges anticipated!

Looks like the Steam Deck RAM spec has been clarified also:

What would be the bandwidth then?
5500 MT/s * 4 * 32 = 704000 MBit/s ?
So I guess somewhere around 88 GB/s (divding by 8 to go from bit to bytes).

I wish that bloody thing had a separate Dock Pro, which would house 40-50 additional CUs.
So that you could play your games 720p handheld and then just switch to 4k docked.

Ok, here's a quick summary (console comparisons since I guess those make the most sense):
  • The GPU is about as fast in raw performance as a base PS4, but it's a much newer and more efficient architecture (the same as PS5/XSX), and it only needs to target 1280x800.
    • In other words, it has about the same raw GPU performance per pixel when targeting 1280x800 as the Xbox Series X has when targeting 4k (slightly more actually).
  • The CPU is basically half a XSX/PS5, with slightly lower clock.
  • 16 GB of RAM (really neat), 4x Switch, same capacity as PS5
Obviously there will be a bit of overhead (varying from basically nothing or even better performance to significant overhead) for running games on Proton compared to Windows, but this is the performance you should expect.
This post made you world famous.

Some people believe that that if RDNA 2 (PS5, XSX/S chip architecture) optimizes the read and write efficiency, the final effect will be closer to PS4 176 GB/s.

It is reported that the highest read and write speed of portable Windows storage devices and Surface tablets on the market is 68GB/s, Switch is 25.6 GB/s, and Ryzen APU equipped with Vega 11 is only 48GB/s.

All games from IGN videos were loaded from microSD cards
That is impressive. So Portal 2, Control, Hades etc.

looked like they ran fine. There was a brief slowdown in the Control footage with debris/physics action but that is a demanding/unoptimized game for all platforms. Kind of surprised they even used Control in marketing but I guess it shows they are confident in the product. :D

I figured I wouldn't bother at all with SD storage and 256gb will be enough for everything. Now I think I will shop around for an SD card during black friday. You can should be able to get another 256gb for 20$.

Would you be able to run Steam in the current desktop mode on the deck do you think?

Not that i would but im a comfy coucher yet i use normal desktop mode on my tv with a wireless mouse, just prefer it to BPM to be honest.

The UI does look better on the deck, i wonder if it will replace BPM on normal Steam.

'i work on a PC all day, last thing i want to do is come home and curl up on the sofa with a PC' - argument against pc handheld gaming from console warrior.
I wonder if video game testers have the opposite problem.
' I play video games all day, last thing I want to do is come home and curl up on the sofa to play more games. Finally the Deck allows me to do some relaxing spreadsheet work on my bed.'

maybe ... but for Mor it's more like:

"I work with spreadsheets all day, last thing I want to do is come home and curl up on the sofa to play games. Finally the Deck allows me to do some more relaxing spreadsheet work in my bed."

This thing seems like playing it handheld would be fine, but do you think hooking it up to a monitor is going to be a worthwhile experience. Are people going to want to play at 720p?

Nintendo Switch gives you 1080p in dock mode, I suppose the Steam Deck can do same if not better ;)

That's true. I hope so! I guess the difference are Switch games were made with specific hardware in mind. AMD's new DLSS like feature should help though i'd imagine.

If i can be sat in a hotel, friends' house, work or mum's place and connect the steamdeck up and play my steam library then 1080, hell even 720, will be fine.
Not having to lunk about my PC or rely on some shite laptop that a relative has bought is ideal for a few games when i'm out and about.
