New week, new thread! What are you playing?

Continuing Super Robot Wars V. In the previous thread, I wrote that the story is confusing since I haven't watched Might Gaine and Nadesico, but I pushed through anyway and now entered the Cross Ange storyline. I did end up watching a few episodes of Nadesico but decided to drop it for now. Why? Because I started watching Cross Ange. :face-with-tears-of-joy: Story and writing is cringy at best and atrocious at worst but, to be frank, the show is quite addicting. The villain being a freaky god is certainly a choice. But Villkiss is cool so I am definitely using it a lot in-game. On the other hand, I'm very excited to have Full Metal Panic roster. Sousuke is the real chad.

I'm also slowly reading through Girls' Frontline 2 second event story of the anniversary, as well as starting Ever17 (the original version). I read 2 routes (10+?) years ago but never finished it, so I'm hoping that I can finish it off this time.

After finishing The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy a few weeks ago, I continued my FFVII Rebirth long replay by completing the Gongaga region.

Last night I had 100%’d Gongaga, so I put the game down and went to the next thing on my backlog, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Really digging this kart racer so far. I kind of dislike the complexity in customising your kart, as it has gacha/microtransaction/MAU bait vibes about it, but the tracks are better than this year’s other kart racer, Mario Kart World, and that’s important to me as I was pretty disappointed with that game.

Just finished Control + the 2 DLCs. Good stuff. Glad I waited with playing it until I had a new graphics card. The lighting looks soooo good with Raytracing.

Also played the new story in the Genshin update. Fantastic stuff. Nod-Krai is the gift that keeps on giving.
Still slowly chucking away at Where Winds Meet as well.

Still thinking what to play next. Tempted to play Another Crab's Treasure. I still need to wrap up Digimon as well, and Monster Hunter Stories that god sidelined by Digimon. There's also Steel Rising which I initially dropped because the performance was untenable, but maybe I can now brute-force it.
Decisions, decisions.

Last week I played through:
  • Dispatch, which I really liked but I wish it was more of a game than a tv show. All the characters are great, writings is well done despite some parts feeling rushed. All in all a very cool evolution of the Telltale formula. Royd da real supa hero (if you know, you know)
  • In Other Waters, which I owned for years but only now finally got to it and it is so good. The slow pace tested my adhd patience at times but it's such a well realized vision of an alien world to explore and discover that if you don't mind text heavy games I highly recommend it. It's not as involved as Citizen Sleep (same dev) but what it does it does so well.
  • The Excavation of Hob's Barrow - I've not played a point and click adventure game for some years now but this one has a great flow to it, puzzles aren't obtuse and it's mostly dialogues that push things forward. Writing's great, and all the characters make for a believable small town atmosphere with just enough sketchy things to notice if you look close enough. Very lovecraftian.

Right now I'm playing through Arco which is blowing my mind with every chapter so far. Very fun combat in the style of Frozen Synapse where all the characters plan their turns and then they all play out at the same time. Writing can be a bit hit or miss, especially when for some reason it feels like modern day at times and takes you out of the experience but the way story comes together is very well done. After 4 hours I can easily recommend everyone check this out.

December's been an absolute treat in terms of gaming so far, it's all banger after banger for me.

For the last few weeks, I've been replaying Cyberpunk 2077 again :)
Also, World of Warcraft has added housing (if you preordered the upcoming Midnight expansion – which I plan to play anyway, so I did), so I've been tinkering with that, and I've been surprised by the amount of customization possible. Its fun so far!

Pirates VR: Jolly Roger: the only reason I played this was due to it "being eligible" for 2025 GOTY. And it's my GOTY now! I'm kidding.
This is a very indie, very janky, very low-budget affair. Playing it makes me want Indiana Jones and The Great Circle playable in VR. But that would require like 3 RTX 5090s.

A VR genre I enjoy no matter how simple, indie and jank is the dungeon crawler. This is a slow-paced adventure game with some light combat. Some parts of it are quite dungeon crawler esque, however. It's fun to solve modest puzzles and loot a tomb bare. Another enjoyable thing to do in VR games is role play, like with your body. Your gesticulations, or pretending to land after falling from a height, or jogging in place, or mugging at an NPC, or improving lines in place of the silent protagonist you embody. So, there's things you can do to make lemonade out of this lemon in a three corner captain's hat.

I started playing Small Saga. The prologue was perfectly executed (lead-up, writing, tutorials, story sequence, music) so it left a strong impression on me. Even after the prologue, the quality is still there, and there are some scenes that went really hard. I have the feeling that this one will be a tight and well-crafted experience.
