|OT| Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) news & discussion - No, it's not just a flu

One thing I kinda disregarded at first is kind of dawning on me these days: going to the doctor is kinda out of the question.
I kinda need to see an ENT for an ear thing that might worsen, and a dermathologist for a mole, and for some skin thing going on with my daughter.
Nothing serious enough to force my luck and go to the hospital, but still I wonder how long we (as a society, and one with proper healthcare 😛) can go on without family doctors.

First of my friends got it, maybe.
High fever, coughing, throat pain. Virus needs some time to move towards the lungs now. He is a strong guy, trains regularly but also smokes...

Could of course also still be the normal flu though, we'll never know as nobody is willing to test him. He had no contact with a "known" covid 19 infected person...

He is self isolating in a separate room and his wife is going to use the rest of the apartment for herself. Though they only have one bathroom, so...

Going to do shopping for them, leaving the groceries at the door.
We are shopping for my parents, a neighbor, us and friends now. This means two full shopping carts per tour and that's sometimes not even enough. People are looking at us like we are crazy. Not much we can do about it.

More or less the same for me. Since it is not painful, I am waiting for the epidemic to end to take care of some very minor health annoyances.

I had booked the appointment at the ENT, before the lockdown, but it was cancelled by the doctor as it was a few days into the lockdown, and I guess he had more urgent matters.

Plus, it was not especially smart to go and see him with coronavirus lurking everywhere. Imagine you go and see the doc', and give him the disease, which then spreads to his other patients from him ; or you get it from him because of a previous patient, despite all the cautionary measures. Then you bring it home and give it to your relatives, without knowing it.

Yeah, I need to go to the hospital too with my son. He's 9 months old already, but my wife is concerned that he's too small for his age. We have been planning to bring him to a nutritionist specialist, but with all this outbreak happening outside, it's not happening anytime soon. We've received some pointers from "Ask the doctor" app for now.

If you need advise on things because your son need a special diet, wouldn't it be possible to make a telephone "conference" with your doctor? Or email?

That'd be wonderful, but sadly the hospital's system is not that advanced yet.

I went out today and there's just so many people out and it's like 80% elderly people too, often staying close to one another or stopping to chat.

Stay the fuck home you old assholes, I'm trying to protect your life here.

I am greatly encouraged by some things about the situation. One, seed and garden companies are selling out as people plant gardens and are trying to grow more of their own food. The farmers in our area who sell us meat are also nearly sold out, which is great for them coming off a tough year last year with drought. And it's great that people are buying more food from small local producers (pretty much because the stores are often still slim on stock). And hugely, the decrease in air and water pollution all around the world due to less traffic and less manufacturing. I hope there can be some enduring lesson learned out of this.

Also echoing other posts, every time I come back from work there's just a shit load of old people walking round my village, more than there was before all this started. Their choice I guess.
 
On a pure whim I went to the New York subreddit. It seems that this city alone had 500 deaths yesterday, and about 300+ the day before that.

That's on the scale of a small country. I just wish I had a source because that seems abnormally high.

It is for the state. There are ~20 million people there, and it is a slightly bigger area than England.

It could be that most of the issues are in the city though.

I had the same assumption. Still, the city is about 8mil+ inhabitants and thus it stands to reason it is the fastest spreading area, as you said.

Thank you, I was unsure. I hope things are going to become better for the people there, I'm really dreading the news in the coming weeks.

In brighter news, Italy is getting better and flattening the curve really seems to work, from what I can see :).

Looking at Wok's link to the US state chart, it's interesting that Connecticut, a large part of which is a NYC suburb essentially, hasn't got any reported deaths. New Jersey, much of which also is basically a NYC suburb, is seeing a lot of cases and deaths. I wonder what accounts for the high death rates in NYC and NJ, and so few in CT.

Connecticut : 3557 infections / 85 deaths : Ratio --> 41.84 (according to the site)
New Jersey: 25950 infections / 537 deaths: Ratio --> 48.32

I'd say they are unfortunately both at the same level... Connecticut has fortunately just less infections currently.
Why? I don't know, maybe less daily traffic between Connecticut and NY relative to traffic between NJ and NY? Population density? Luck because there is a bigger infection herd somewhere in NJ?
Hard to say without a lot more data tbh.

Also keep in mind: Reported infections are not how many people are really infected. The number of real infections could be ten times higher in some regions of the U.S.

Yep. All really good points. My hope was that some factor had it squashed in CT, but as you're saying it doesn't look that way. What that chart may really be showing is that reporting accuracy varies widely by state.

+23060 infections (+40%!) is unheard off. Did they increase PCR testing, started anti body testing?

I guess so. The number of tests per day is supposed to be increased a lot.
If I remember right, x2 or x3 by the end of the week, and it should go up to x5 by the end of April.

As for the steep increase in the number of deaths, the stat was previously only accounting for people who died at the hospital, and it retroactively accounts for people who died in nursing homes due to covid. The number should be large in the coming days as the retroactive count is not yet finished.

Edit: There is a column "total tests" now. I did not know we were so bad.
As of today, France is just slightly better than UAE (with large cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, etc.) which has not tested anyone yesterday.
Yesterday, France was behind Turkey in terms of testing.

That would be an explanation. The people who shit-post the most used to do it from work. If they are at home, they consume books/videos/games, they have to take care of their kids, cook, fix stuff, garden, etc, so that they have less time to be active on social media to engage in stupid fights.

That being said, we would need a proof that people are effectively less active on the Internet, before making any assumption about it.

I was thinking the same thing! I wonder what they are doing. Perhaps people on here can talk about it. For one, I read more and try to practice a few things.

I'm working from home, so the opportunity to post is the same for me.
Posting about games just seem to be a bit less relevant.
So I've personally reduced my "post time" to a couple sites I'm not constantly confronted with idiocy. So mainly this site and one or two sub reddits.

MC was the only community I've been active, so I guess that's why not really changed with me.

I have noticed some changes. Like I'm less tolerant to "happy crap" on youtube. And I also have become much more firm in my goal to find something serious when it comes to dating. I'm straight up telling the ones I'm talking to, that I'm looking to start a family.

I'm definitely less online since the lockdown. I work from home, and I spend much time with my daughter, both for school work and to keep her busy. This weekend the weather is great, so I'm in the garden most of the day.

I've read horror story of the french police's abuse of power to write up people who hadn't copied the entire thing, including check-boxes, by hand so this is very much welcomed.
 
NJ almost up to 1000 deaths.

Still going into work, still walking an hour during my lunch hour. Biggest routine change is that I dread going to the store for something.... Ugh.

Outside of work, all outside the home fun is dead, except hiking.

Just gotta take one day at a time and focus on protecting shit.

You can develop symptoms days after testing positive, in fact pulmonary inflammation (the most common case sending people to intensive care) can develop 8 to 10 days after showing the first symptoms.
