... and then there's the danger of a flare up when people go out to pubs and clubs on the day the quarantine is lifted. I'll be staying away from crowded places for a week or two after we're allowed out again.

edit: i read an article about "Virtual Pubs" where people in teams who are working from home meet-up on Friday evenings via Video-Conference rather than the pub. lol. Good idea though.

The quarantine isn't gonna end any time soon, don't get your hopes up.
We are likely talking a few months here
Yes. Hong Kong just got their 2nd wave started because they thought it was already safe and opened up their borders for a moment.

We can't simply stay put for a month then open everything again like normal. This whole social distancing will be the new normal for a while.

It's funny how they keep trying to reopen the jockey club here, then they extend their closure every time the cases raise again, like even if the cases stayed low, what exactly do you think will happen if you try to reopen one of the most crowded places here :p

florida closed down all restaurants sans pick up and delivery. My job is uncertain at this point, I work both buss and fryer/expo. They told me to stay home this weekend while they will evaulate where we stand on monday so fingers cross that I get at least two or three shifts this week. thankfully I have a around 20k saved up but no clue how long this will last.

well, it looks like I might not be on the payroll anymore if they can't get a loan.. fuck.

unknownhero Damn, that sucks to hear. Got my fingers crossed for ya!
I live in a seaside town and seasonal work keeps this place alive and gives jobs for a mind-boggling number of people. Corona's going to hit this place hard. Hotels have already made swathes of staff redundant. The manager of my hairdresser was saying the girls will be paid 80% by the government but it's not like they can do private jobs to make up the funds.

Service industries and towns that rely on them are going to have a tough time for a while.

Update:
Just finished Day One of Working From Home and it went well. I just need to sort out where TF i'm going to put a 32" screen when i'm not using it. Luckily i can do 80% of my work remotely and the rest of it would be difficult as it relies on other people or physical access to equipment but most of that is either irrelevant as no-one is in or a low priority so eh. No bother at the moment.

Day 1 of our quasi quarantine and people started singing in my city. You even sometimes see candles in windows, telling people that they are not alone.
Streets are not completely empty but it is a lot better. No idea if it is enough though.

Death Numbers are depressing, especially from Italy and Spain. Many people are currently loosing loved ones from all over the world.
This will be a painful and depressing year.

Went to BK yesterday.
They only serve through drive-thru now and they make you give them your ID and a telephone number (I suppose to call you if an employee possibly infected you?)

The cashier also wear gloves and surgery masks now and they won't even take your money, they make you throw it into a salad box underneath their window.

Wanted to go to a bakery now to buy some breakfast, but it's closed over this.
The butcher i pass everyday doesn't sell in store anymore, he makes people line up in front of it with cross shaped Stickers he placed on the sidewalk in 2m distances in front of it.

The kebab shop now also only does deliveries and nothing in store anymore.

Because i couldn't get breakfast from the bakery, i went to Penny instead.
They now only allow individuals with shopping carts into the store.
No groups and no individuals without Shopping carts (I don't understand this measure).
The cash register also has stickers signalling 2M distances and the cashiers themselfs sit behind makeshift windows of plastic.

_ _ _ _

Homeoffice at work hasn't been functioning in over a week now, giving us 100's of complain calls everday, but at least we managed to find the source of the issue, being that our Government VPN Provider literally ran out of available IP adresses because of the sudden increase in users.

_ _ _ _

This is going to be the new normal for a while.
The apocalypse truly is boring

Prices are starting to go crazy over here. One piece of Bombay onion is $1 now. It was usually like 10 cents. :disapproval-blob:

Bakery is closed, bread, flour and yeast in my supermarket not available. ¯\(ツ)
Supermarket assured me it's coming in daily, but that doesn't help much if people keep on buying like crazy.
It's not like there is nothing else to eat, so it's not really a problem. But it is strangely hard to get bread or the ingredients for bread...

So, started cultivating my own yeast, sourdough and found a supplier that is selling flour, in 25kg packs. It wasn't even expansive, just an unreasonable amount for a 4 person household. I guess we are making our own bread and buns from now on. But so are many people in my neighborhood. Kind of crazy side effect. Once this is over this will be a nation of bakers.

Anyway, first "Brötchen" (Buns) came out of the oven just fine (dough rested over night). They are surprisingly good.

As a key worker I have had to come to work everyday.

Thankfully I don't deal face to face with the public so I'm not particularly at a heightened risk, and most of my colleagues have been told to work from home so my 16 floor office has about 60-70 people in it.

Not a baker here, but an Asian food aficionado, and the rice shortage is annoying as fuck.
I've found out that the local Asian grocery store still has 15kg bags of Thai rice available, but I just can't get myself to buy them.
For as much as I love cooking Asian, I'm pretty sure an actual Asian family would make better use of 15kg of rice than me. 😭

Holy shit, i just saw that Italy crossed 7000 deaths?!
I too cannot keep up with the numbers. One day, it is 2500 deaths. A week later, it is 7000. Next week, it might be 15000. Exponential growth is so damn scary when you encounter it in your daily life.

In France, there are ~1100 deaths, and ten day ago, it felt like we had things under relative control with less than 150 deaths. Just for yesterday: 240 deaths, which is a lot more than the total since the start of the outbreak we had a week ago. Next week, these already gigantic numbers will be dwarfed once again.

France is perfectly walking in Italy's steps. Spain is on another level, so scary.

The good news is that the lockdown seems to have a positive effect in Italy, albeit with a delay.

Given that you follow this so closely, I hesitate to say this given that you probably already know. Confinement's effects are seen only much later on the deaths given the incubation period and the time it takes for the virus to run its course. Still, the curve should flatten for these places that obey confinement.

Still it's scary how identical the progression is, as you pointed out.

I read a post about a guy who was mocking this whole thing while vacationing in Italy, then got to Spain, returned to Mexico and his mother dying of the virus. I wonder if it that was real.

Another red day.
And it will get worse, this is just the beginning.

No idea, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Police in my city today complained about teenagers spitting at old people and shouting "corona".

AFAIK, the U.S. highly increased their testing in the last couple of days. The current infection numbers are probably just a representation for what has been going on for a long time now. The number of deaths seems to be currently a better indication of how wide spread the infection is.

To give you an idea: Germany has half the number of reported infections, but the number of deaths is significantly lower (a fifth).

Very high testing capacities are important in general.
Quick, reliable and mass testing would allow for a different strategy: Find and isolate infected people asap, instead of having to shut down everything.

This kind of strategy seems to work pretty well in South Korea btw.

Indeed. South Korea should be the role model for every other country in the world.

Indonesia is adopting the similar method (we are ven importing the test kits from there), so hopefully the virus will be more contained here. People in the big cities are quite supportive too by staying at home if possible. Too bad that a lot of people still have to go to work since a lot of companies can't afford to send them home and/or incapable of adapting to WFH.
