As you can see by my avatar
I've watched Highlander
Kurgan is a jerk but fun, Clancy Brown really nailed the role
Connery being Egyptian was hilarious but dang his scenes were great
MacLoed is the weakest performance but geez does he have the derpiest epxression ever for a protagonist, at least he is a very sociable guy

I've been watching the Harley Quinn animated series (the DC Universe original). Had no idea it was a comedy show for a mature audience. Loving it so far.

Going to watch Tenet tomorrow. I have avoided reading or seeing anything about it except the one trailer I saw in the cinema last week. Seems pretty weird so not sure what to expect. Hoping its great!

Oh dear, I started watching Stargirl (DC Universe) on amazon earlier and 5 episodes in i think i'll be watching it all. First ep is a bit rough but it starts to pick up from then onwards and it's pretty entertaining. Some tough slice-of-school-life moments, actiony bits, some light-hearted bits to mix things up. So far it's way better than i thought it would be for something i knew nothing about and only put on after work because it was on the Amazon banner on my firestick and i couldn't be bothered finding anything else to watch while winding down.

Let's see how it holds up over the season.

Just caught up to Infinity Train Season 3
...I don't think there is a shocked image or meme that can fully convey it. Really good season overall and the show keeps improving with its themes and characters as it progresses.
Really need a season 4 now XO

EDIT: For that matter, watch Infinity Train y'all.
Here is the original pilot that eventually spawned the series, recommend for those of you who like dogs or are dog owners

Also, avoid searching for the show on youtube, you'll get spoiled by some of the endings. I swear these youtube fuckwads really need to get their heads out of their asses sometimes. :jj_fool:

I saw some people complaining about Nolan sound mixing (you know where), and this just reminded me that I hate sound mixing in a good % of movies TV Shows. As an example, the first few episodes of Dr Who S2 I watched were really difficult to the hear (not just for me), with a loud, mediocre and omnipresent music.
And to be clear, I know even less about sound than image, which means I don't know much at all.

Apart from looking if I can find good sound presets for my insert 4kTV name*, what can be done ? Subtitles obviously, but nothing else ? With the deep customization we have on the PC media players, isn't there some control over the voice level possible ?

*looks like the answer is Sony KD55XF9005 TV LED, that's whaat my google history tells me :tightly-closed-eyes:

Yeah watched two episodes now and its not that bad, will continue!
It has a bit more cash behind it compared to the standard CW show seeing as it originated on that DC streaming service. I quite enjoyed it, Luke Wilson is great.

Started watching Ted Lasso last night, it's actually really good. Has heart.

Thanks for the reminder, i'd totally forgotten that The Boys were back. It'll be a nice cheerful way to unwind after work... oh, wait, maybe not.
I don't have Netflix or HBO so i'll have to wait for "Raised by Wolves" and "Away" or grab the Firestick with Housemate's Netflix on it.

I was interested in finally checking out The Umbrella Academy after having read the first TPB of the comic, which I was way LTTP for as well.

Knee jerk reaction : what the fuck did I just watch ?
Long, long, so very long, every scene takes an eternity, why the hell did you go for that runtime when you obviously didn't have to ?
I said Doctor Who was slow and that you could cut a good 10-15 min off each episode if you got rid of the filler.

WELL, I'm sorry, Doctor, there is a new King in town.

How can you make a scene so slow and repetitive that even Queen can't energize it ?

Then I read the first episode of the second TPB and nope, the book storytelling isn't anywhere close to that. And they also quite toned down the weird bits about the original work. Maybe understandable, a litteral adaptation would maybe not work well, but still, it's sanitized.

Really not sold on watching episode 3.

if you stick with it and start S2 it gets much more compact pace wise and is easily a step up from S1

That's surprising.

Just finished watching the first season and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Yes, the pacing isn't always optimal but there are so many beautiful and well composed scenes in there, acting is strong, well-written dialogues for the most part, enough surprises to keep me on my toes and a pinch of dark humor to flavor everything. I had the feeling watching a well-crafted show.

Only thing I didn't like was Vanya. I know we are supposed to feel mercy for her because her cold-blooded father put her away instead of teaching her control and how to deal with her rage and power. She was always lonely, marginalized, didn't feel accepted etc.
But I can't overcome the fact that she was already a killer as a kid, a literal psychopath who killed people because they were trying to teach her that there are rules in life and that she has to adept.

Of course, I have no idea about the comics so.... :shrugblob:
Knowing the original material will massively influence the perception of an adaption.
Opinions also differ and sometimes a show doesn't resonate with me either.
I, for example, also tried watching Dr. Who... it's not a show I enjoyed.

Interesting points !
Firstly, let me say I'm glad we can disagree on our perception of the show's merits without arguing. You allude to several interesting aspects.

So yeah, several angles.
I admit to have some difficulties to appreciate the show partly for very personal reasons. I watched it with my mother, and she didn't like it. Which is an uninteresting point... that becomes important when you take into account that I hate watching something with someone who don't take pleasure in it. I always wrongly feel responsible for the entertainment of the other people watching.
So that's one thing and yeah, very specific and personal.

That being said, while I agree that the show regularly offers well thought out shots, I still can't help but think they often veer on the longer than necessary side. I'm no genius, but I mean 'I get your point, can we go forward ?' kind of feeling.

Ultimately I think you might have hit the nail on the head with the comic book comment. At first if you talk about the possible issues resulting of having read the source material, I would think about being satisfied or not with the faithfulness of the adaptation, or the fact that knowing where the show is headed might spoil my fun. But I wouldn't have thought about another side effect, which might be at play. I know where this is going and while I don't hate the moment, I can't help to anticipate the next. A feeling of having to go faster because damn, I already read that. Yeah, it might play a part.

I still think 60 minutes a pop is far too slow, but as I said you make good points.

That being said, I already said the show takes some liberties, mostly aesthetic, that I don't care for (I can view the show as its own thing, I'm not going to get the pitchforks out). Like the firefight in the cafeteria for example, far less out there than the original.
But, and that's what I'm getting at, your spoiler about Vanya is just plain fucking wrong to me. There is not a single hint of it in the source material and learning about it from you, I can't help but think the adaptation took too much liberties there. Needless. It's about a very dysfunctional family of super humans, there is zero need to hammer this element in that way.

That describes how I felt about GoT many times. So I understand where you are coming from.
I still enjoyed it, especially the first three seasons but I think I had a different kind of enjoyment than people going in blindly.
For the last season... that was amateurish and it erased a pop culture phenomenon out of existence.
:minos_sad:

I always wrongly feel responsible for the entertainment of the other people watching.
When I meet my wife and we watched a new show together, that I picked and it turned out bad I tended to apologize. Until she laughed and asked me if I wrote the script?
Enjoying something with a close person is always more fun, wanting them to enjoy it too is natural and I actually think it is an important point.

Like the firefight in the cafeteria for example, far less out there than the original.
That's interesting. I enjoyed the scene because it showed of his teleportation power and his combat prowess.
He was quick, deadly and effective. But as said, I have no point of reference , especially regarding aesthetics.
I'm now even more curious about the comics.

I still can't help but think they often veer on the longer than necessary side.
Just one of my personal quirks. I can stand in awe for a long time getting lost in a painting, picture or a natural scenery.
But I understand your point.

your spoiler about Vanya is just plain fucking wrong to me.
Oh no, I'm sorry. I didn't want to spoil anything to you. I thought it would be kind of similar enough.
They are clearly a dysfunctional family of super heroes in the show. I also feel like I'm the only one having this opinion about Vanya. Most people seem to like her.

All I can say, maybe watch one-two episodes more. Opinions are subjective by nature. Me disliking a certain character or liking a season doesn't mean anything.

Going to start watching Stargirl, but after binging both Umbrella Academy and Doom Patrol I'm little worried it will be boring.
Have you watched Black Lightning? Really good superhero show IMO.
Just treat these CW shows like...Young Adult stuff. Long as you temper your expectations, you'll likely enjoy them.
I aim to watch Stargirl someday too, since I hear the first season is good.

Will keep Black Lightning in mind! Yeah Stargirl was alright but so often I got little restless and just did stuff on my phone at the same time. So it is very light entertainment, as alot of TV is.

As you guessed it's just an aesthetic difference, nothing big. And a plot one I guess, but again, minor.
In the comic books the aggressors are not hired mercenary and their costume is far more colorful. Nothing big, then, but I like comic books and it participate in the out there aspect of the book. Sanitizing this element is a detail, just a detail that I don't care for.

No issue here. I opened the spoiler tag willingly, knowing that I had read the first volume of the book and that I could be spoiled if the show borrowed from other volumes or created its own plot point.
What I meant is that I think this original plot point looks at first glance to be needless and ham fisted. It creates a psychopath history that wasn't there and wasn't needed imho. Firstly because it's a tired trope, and second because as I said, they are dysfunctional, they have powers and shit unfortunately ensues. No need to make that one character some proto serial killer (I'm caricaturing, didn't have a chance to watch the remaining episodes yet, maybe it's lighter).

They aren't mercenaries here either. As far as I understand it they were time travel agents, after all one of their weapons could be matched to a murder case from the 1920s (or so, I'm bad at memorizing dates).

I would have said 1938 but could be wrong. Now that you mention it I may have misunderstood the whole thing, I took it as common mercenaries being employed by the time agents, but maybe I was just thrown off by their 'normal' attire.

Absolutely true, though if I may add that the first season of the arrow was more like a crossover between superheroes and the denver clan from the 1980s.
It was a bit trashy but had an exceptionally good season. A shame the show went downhill afterwards.
Though again, I dropped out at one point. No idea if it ever recovered.

Nice character design, not sure that this is the best casting choice in the current climate. I'm not against disparity like these - Kratos is voiced by the immense and awesome Christopher Judge after all and he couldn't be more appropriate - but these days... It feels wrong.
