Can't escape the fact that social media is important these days and thought we could both share our social media and talk about new ones that might popup and shit on those that already exist.

One realisation I had when meeting with gallery owners at Photo London was that pretty much everyone uses Instagram as a metric on how to find someone. That is the first one they check if someone could be worth considering. Sadly Instagram isn't really for creatives anymore but more for influencers. But I still need to figure that one out. On how to grow.

While I encourage talking about dangers of social media and also shitting on them, but don't shit on someone who uses something you don't approve of.

So which ones are you using?

That said, I'm on Twitter. The worst of it all. :p

twitter is basically it for me these days, not counting discord or the very rare forum posting. and even then, i have been on a fairly long hiatus from twitter while i worked on some mental health stuff that required me to cut out as much overstimulation as possible. only just recently became somewhat active again in the past few months, in a much better place now and i have some project stuff that i'll need to be actively Online for soon-ish too so it works out nicely!

i consider myself lucky that my friends mostly congregated around only a handful of places, so i didn't have to worry about being on twitter, tumblr, instagram, facebook, mastodon instances, pillowfort, tiktok, pintrest, myanimelist, letterboxd, etc, all at the same time. i'm only one woman with a limited amount of energy and time, having to juggle between that many spaces to keep up with everyone would be an absolute nightmare - and really i'm just not about living my life at a heart attack's pace tyvm.

I use twitter to follow artists. I don't even really use it to socialize, I entirely detach myself from that. I do have a secret account primarily for vtubers.

I don't use social media for work/family for obvious reasons, there's really no reason to honestly.

I've been trying to do some art but my output is incredibly low so I have no presence on the internet, but the plan is to do more.

I’m trying to reduce the time I’m ‘idle’ on the Internet, just mindlessly refreshing pages and stuff. Also, I think Facebook is just a self imposed ad reel.

I deleted Tinder and Bumble accounts as well cause they weren’t working for me anymore.

Haha no! I like you guys and everyone here is very nice to each other pretty much most of the time so there’s no reason to leave.

I said it at the beginning of the thread, but I think Facebook (and Instagram) should stay down. Nothing of value would be lost. Companies and people using it for work would find alternatives. The world would move on. It's way past time FB goes away.

LEANIJA Being a photographer, or visual artist and not using Instagram you might as well not exist. Sure there are great alternatives but no ones uses them and if everyone went onto their favourites it would just fracture the whole industry. It would take a decade for a new one place to take its place, and in the mean time people would suffer

Yeah I was about to post this. I want to keep Instagram around for when/if I ever upload drawings and photos.

Musk is a bit of a tart indeed, but i think he has good ideas in principle and in the lens of history will probably be noted as someone who helped push tech growth in these years. Ignoring his shit personality, SpaceX is a boon. Starlink is absolutely a boon when so many Satellite providers have become complacent and stale because they know rural users don't have much choice. Electric cars are the short-term future of transportation and if we can keep refining them we just may be able to kick fossil fuel for good. (hopefully.) And I can't really think of a better champion of this than Musk, even if his end goal is money.

I don't really think he'll make Twitter better or worse, but now that he owns it, I don't think he'll tank it He did say he'll keep it compliant with the EU's digital and hate speech laws. It probably doesn't matter for the everyday person, people surround themselves with what and whom they want to regardless.

The unfortunate truth is that Twitter doesn't have a sufficient competitor or replacement. People point to Mastodon and it's ilk, but the reality is that they really don't have the same centralization, discoverability, and most importantly for a social media platform, the user-base. Etc... Now I'm not saying other platforms shouldn't try, but I just don't have the energy to keep bouncing around from place to place on a "maybe" as I get older. Especially because it seems like friend groups get smaller and smaller as time goes on, and not everyone wants to move together.

Sad state isn't it? Kinda feel stuck. The other thing too is like just recently you know I started drawing, and right now I'm not really too concerned about being seen. I'm at the stage where I'm still just barely drawing well proportioned mannequins. But i mean, in the future what's my best avenue for discoverability? All i can think of is Twitter for that... Seems that's where a lot of artists kinda congregate and take commissions.

I can’t help to think that the free speech guys just want to use every slur in the book without consequence.

Speaking of NSFW social media, what options are there after Tumblr when to shit? I still miss that place but nothing seems to be anywhere near the greatness it had.

Only resonalble I know of are like Twitter, deviantart? I know ello is supposed to be good for it also. And the only reason I checked out Mastodon in the first place was for Tumblr replacement back in the day.

Some, sure...
But the hatemongers you need to worry about - those that manage to influence people outside of the right/extreme right spectrum - don't really need slurs.

They're unfortunately more nuanced with how they sow their hate.

We've seen this more in force in the last decade, how they can build up hate and shift the mainstream opinion towards the right, without any slurs.

But yeah, some of the more primitive ones would surely be very happy to use them regularly and openly.
