Discussion Ethically Online

I saw that Nepal banned a bunch of social media, among them Mastodon. Practically how would that work?
They ban the domains they know. The rest carry on as normal.

They can’t exactly ban the protocol, so mastodon posts from other instances will be cached on the unbanned instances.

The main issue would be instances hosted in Nepal. They’re probably fucked.

it wouldn't

but yes - what Nebulys said :P they can ban whatever they want, creating a new instance takes minutes, so unless they just have someone combing the entire internet 24/7 for all possible instances - they can't ban it completely

At what point will the internet just be what is "allowed", like in some places in the world they have internet that has a tier that is only Facebook services, everything else is blocked unless you pay, so technically it would be possible for ISPs to only service allowed sites and apps.

Speaking of Mastodon, is there a convenient way to combine feeds from Bluesky and Mastodon?

It's like Apple wants to piss me off and go back to Android.
I mean google is one of the worst out there. So it’s not like it would be an improvement. If you really want to have a cleanish phone I guess fair phone with a custom OS?

Until we get a more viable mobile OS with app support, the best option to be ethically online is not have a phone.

I weighed up my personal priorities and I still stick with Apple.

Google are just as big Trump simps as Apple, and they also monetise your private data. Easy choice imo.

I'm (mostly) not serious btw. I understand that with tech you have to pick your favorite flavor of shit, because it's poop all the way down.

To me besides even being 'ethical' I spend as little as humanly possible on a phone. It doesn't make sense to spend a lot on a phone. It does make sense to spend a lot on a home computer (unfortunately, that's more the norm, but a computer has uses).

I’m kind of the opposite since I use my phone a lot 😅

One of these days I'll actually start using my domain.
I've been too lazy to properly set it up, well and also I was thinking that I might switch email service but I've also been too lazy and also a bit busy to look into it a bit more.
