Community The Emulation Thread - When That PC Port Just Ain't Happening

I only just learned that PS4 emulation has made major strides recently. Which got me thinking, once that matures, what would I actually want to use it for?

Generally, emulators used to be important for me for JRPGs, and that was pretty much it. But I cannot think of a single JRPG of any relevance that is PS4 exclusive. Is there one I'm missing, or is that era simply completely over?
Dragon's Crown Pro, Sakura Wars and uhh, Bloodborne?
(and also 13 Sentinels which isn't an JRPG, but it's a good game)

Only such exclusives nowadays is when Nintendo moneyhats/develops one. Ie Mario JRPG, collabs like the Rabbids, funding projects like Astral Chain etc. Pretty much every other is 'console excusive' at best meaning they get a PC port because no moneyhatting is enough to confine huge projects to one system.

Yeah Nintendo does have a pretty good amount of JRPG exclusives still (also second party or whatever Monolith is), but PS used to be the platform for that and has completely lost that distinction.

New Sakura Wars! Now that's something I'd actually want to try given near-unlimited time.

It's good for us since almost all JRPG series can be found on PC, but yeah, there is very little to be found on PS4 in terms of notable JRPGs that aren't already available on PC.

From my own collection, I got stuff like Exist Archive, Grand Kingdom, Full Metal Panic and most pre-Steam SRW and Vanillaware games, but it's mostly just sitting there collecting dust and I'm keeping it around just to rip games once the emulator matures and/or there's a fan translation. :flare_lmao:

So, what do you guys use as a frontend/launcher for emulation? ES-DE? Playnite? Steam?

I'm trying ES-DE and while it's pretty good, the gamepad oriented layout/no mouse controls seems restricting in PC when trying to manage my collection for the first time. Spent last weekend organizing my roms/iso's and such.

On PC? Retroarch shortcuts added to Steam when I play something, Retroarch alone when I'm just trying some games
On Deck? EmuDeck (well, Steam Rom Manager) shortcuts added to Steam to have proper play time counting.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel after exhausting all fan favorite/classic arcade stuff yields some interesting things pretty often. Never heard of this one before.

Fighting game vs monsters, kinda like proto-Red Earth I guess, but actually co-op.

Wow quite a lot of tokusatsu and Yatterman vibes there, with a straight up Doronjo at home. I never heard of that either.

Having a good time with Silent Hill F.

Played Unicorn Overlord today, shame this game isn't on PC.

I've been craving another Devil Survivor game, shame it probably will never happen. Some of my all time favorite games, especially the first one. Gonna replay them on the Deck, don't have a 3DS anymore. Having so many of my favorite games across a bunch of old systems inside this little machine is priceless, it's so damn convenient.

Someone looked into beetle saturn core issues I've had for ages and fixed them. Grandia FMV no longer drops to lower fps/speed and it has also fixed minor performance dips I had on Last Bronx and Touge 2 (I chalked those up to my ancient PC but Grandia FMV just didn't make sense to be slow).
It does seem to perform worse on my phone now though, not entirely sure since I hadn't tested that in a while. Maybe it'll be ironed out as well.

Edit: I also just noticed they've added an option for transparencies to be turned into real transparencies like other Saturn emulators have had so now you can just enable that and not have to faff about with getting an NTSC/RF/whatever type CRT shader that looks right for this system specifically, you can use the same shaders as you do for other cores (unless you want the rainbow effect). They've also changed the deinterlace options to allow you to actually turn them off altogether (so again you can use a CRT shader's own deinterlacing features without any interference from the emulator). Similarly for the PS beetle core as well.

The NTSC/RF CRT shaders are still best for Saturn transparencies atm because in games like Virtua Cop 2 stuff go invisible instead of have a transparent hue.

My Dolphinbar is going bad but thanks to a random comment on retrogametalk I may not need to get another (and use my plain USB sensor bar for IR lights).

Previously I could never pair my Wii remotes to my PC with standard BT and failed to find one of those BT adapters that are fully compatible because they use the same chip as the Wii or whatever so you can use the passthrough option in Dolphin, which is why I got the Dolphinbar.

Apparently the emulate Wii's BT adapter option in Dolphin just works with any old BT adapter (or at least mine) and it auto pairs the Wii remotes with no hassle.

I tried it and it worked like a charm.

The only other thing I do with the Dolphinbar is use it in mouse mode for non-Dolphin lightgun game emulation but that should be doable as well because the controllers stay paired even after closing Dolphin, it just streamlines the process of pairing with Windows.

Sadly I tried Gunmote to map mouse controls for non Dolphin games but the cursor was very erratic. It's not the USB sensor bar's fault as within Dolphin functionality is just as good as it was with the Dolphinbar without pointer or other issues so I need to find another app that works.
