I played the game on deck a couple of month ago, if I remember well I had the same problem and the problem was that it was missing a windows redist installation or something like that. I fixed it by installing another game, like super meat boy or below, that indeed installed the windows pre requisites required for them to work
It was a pristine new deck even for me, problem is that, for some reason, Alan wake doesn't trigger the windows pre requisites installation during his first start. Only workaround I found was that, give it a try
That's also why it doesn't happen to anyone, if you install and start a couple of games prior to AW you'll never encounter the problem, because Proton container will start filling up his folder with all the different windows things necessary to work. I should've done a bug report but I'm too lazy, I'm pretty sure that it's a reproduceable issue if you just format the Deck and install AW on it in a pristine Proton container or whatever
I wonder if this explains some other discrepancies. For example, what I have been dealing with above playing the second AI: The Somnium Files. It seemingly works for some folks and does not work for others. It is possible something gets fixed in the installation of another game.

So far I have tried Proton7 GE 20, Experimental, 7.0-3, and 6.3-8. I think I tried another one, but it did not even run at that point. I am playing through the first Somnium and still had to use GE to get the FMVs to work for me. Are you in the Beta branches?
I think I was in the beta branch at the time. And actually I probably was using a version of GE which I have since uninstalled, (that's why it said I was using regular Proton when I took a look to confirm it yesterday).

How weird! I'll pass on your suggestion to the fellow that had the issue, hopefully it works!

You are a hero, it turns out that this was indeed the problem and the game installed properly once something else was installed first. Thank you for solving this puzzle!

Has anybody here played Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck? I have a weird texture and lightning flickering issues in game. I've seen a topic on Reddit that turning DSR on will cause this, but I have it disabled. I'm playing in 720p, almost everything medium and FSR disabled. I also tried changing Proton to experimental but that didn't fix the issue.

On one hand I'm super excited about the ramped up production! Then I realise that then I might not be able to save enough money to buy it! I'm only half way saved up and it says around October, should be doable but if it gets to me faster than that then not sure!

  • Fixed an issue where clicking in-game links when offline would get Steam Deck into a bad state
  • Fixed navigation issues in the game EULA dialog
  • Fixed crashing issue when deleting a screenshot
  • Fixed the controller configurator failing to load when Steam Cloud is disabled
  • Fixed configurator failing to load when encountering corrupted controller layout files
  • Fixed controller virtual menus being limited to 4 active menus
  • Fixed a bug causing the touchscreen to occasionally be stuck in mouse-emulation mode when accessing the configurator in-game
Really great patch!!!!

I was in the mood to play Into the Breach last night, but I own the game on GoG so I decided to install Heroic Games Launcher on my Deck. This worked well, but when I added the game as a non-Steam game to launch it in Game Mode, it just launched the Heroic Games Launcher instead of the game directly. This can be solved by using the Heroic Bash Launcher:

This great tool automatically adds direct launch scripts to Steam for all installed games in the Heroic Games Launcher, complete with the cover art. This works really well, be sure to check this out if you want to play your GoG collection on the Deck.

You can also use BoilR, which finds SteamGridDB art and automatically puts it on the games so it looks very slick.

DJMAX Respect V was confirmed playable on Steam Deck a few months ago and I somehow missed this. I played the heck out of this back in the day on the PSP. To celebrate this, I bought the complete package. I've actually spent more on this Steam sale preparing for my Deck than I have in past several years combined.

What's everyone doing for audio on the Steam Deck? Is the onboard mic good? I'm thinking about some light wired headphones (KPH40 maybe) with the onboard mic for Discord use.

I don't play anything with voice chat on the Deck, so I just use the built-in speakers (which are significantly better than the speakers on any other portable I've ever owned btw.).

If I can use them, onboard speakers, and Koss Porta Pros if I need to play at night.
Just don't use BT headphones, lag is too high for gaming.

That's an understatement - they are better than many proper speaker sets.

I don't know if many people are aware, but recently somebody made a mod that let's you inject FSR 2.0 if the game supports DLSS. Since I am playing Cyberpunk 2077 right now I thought that it would be great opportunity to test it on Deck since this game supports DLSS.
This is the mod I used for Cyberpunk: FidelityFx Super Resolution 2.0
Thanks to this mod I was able to play Cyberpunk on Steam Deck in 1080p on mostly medium settings, with DLSS set to performance in rather steady 30 fps.

Here are some screenshots I took on Steam Deck ( they are a bit compressed):

It looks really good on 47" TV.

Word of warning is that it downloads ~90GBs on Deck instead of the usual 40 (well, I actually downloaded like 110GBs in total somehow just to uninstall it after more or less 2 songs, great that it runs pretty well but I can't play it in that format, even with plugged in keyboard).

I laughed at the "ramped up production" announcement because it came 2 days after I finally got my email :ripblob: glad for everyone else though. Going to buy a mix of Deck games and just games I want during the sale. hoping Deck comes quickly and isn't cursed like some of my shipments lately have been.

For those talking about headphones, I know it was talked about recently but it's worth noting wireless earbuds/headphones may have notable latency. I have never owned earbuds so I bought some fancy, low-latency ones and will report on them once I can test with the deck (Audio-Technica ATH-CKS50TW). Smartphones apparently "cheat" a little and sometimes delay video to line up audio but that obviously doesn't work well for gaming.

Deck doesn't support any of the low latency BT codecs.

I can test myself when I get it but according to this thread it does support some kind of LL mode but it is off by default (for some reason) in gaming mode, and this thread mentions LDAC (which is not as good as aptX adaptive and less common but still a LL capable mode)

From the sounds of it, Proton / Linux doesn't support aptX adaptive yet due to proprietary something needing to be implemented, so it's a potential add. There are "fake" LL modes that by all accounts do work (there are wireless headphones that have this option but still use older codecs) as well. I have 3 different wireless sets to test with (more if I borrow some from my partner) and while I'm not going to try rhythm games I usually notice when audio isn't synced right

A while ago I mentioned that The Sekimeiya seemed to work fine on the Deck despite being labelled Unsupported.
I have to take that back, Valve was right. :disappointed-face:
With a quick try it seems "fine-ish" but it just freezes randomly and you have to force quit it. I've tried various Proton versions and native runtime (it has a native Linux version), but no luck. It "seems" to get more stable the farther you go back in Proton versions but also performs worse and worse like that and it really is not a pleasant time.

I'm already past the refund window and I don't wanna refund it anyway cause I'm really digging it, so I suppose I'll have to go the Moonlight streaming route for it.

I can already see how fanboys will react to this, but it's a pretty obvious conclusion to how the Steam Deck's value reflects on that of the Nintendo Switch. It's a PC. This means a library that potentially includes every game ever released, whether native or through emulation. No port begging required. It means a platform that isn't going to hold your library back from hardware updates. It means competitive pricing. It means one-size-doesn't-fit-all. You can customize every part of your experience. It's a PC.

Portable gaming is an attractive option. And not just (what we thought of as) portable games, but all games. That's a large part of why the Switch is so successful. It's not just Nintendo games. But if not for one important distinction I wouldn't care at all -- IT'S A PC!

It doesn't help that of the 3 console brands, Nintendo has consistently been the most anti-consumer. They survive mostly on niche and now their niche has been duplicated but better. Not that they're in any danger, for as hostile as they are they have a super loyal fanbase, but they're clearly going to have to try harder if they want to endure the long run as a console maker.

From the article:
"While all Steam Deck 256GB and 512GB models initially came with a PCI express 3.0 x4 SSD, some now ship with a PCI express 3.0 x2 SSD instead."
"While Valve claims its testing didn’t find any impact on gaming performance when using the x2 SSD, it didn’t mention any impact on load times or responsiveness."

Ultimately I don't think this will matter too much but it would be interesting to see someone compare the Deck with an X2 SSD and with one that has a X4 SSD.

Did you try PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%?

Friendly advice - if you're moving several dozen GBs off of Deck's SSD to an SD card, don't do it all at the same time.
Turn off the unit and let it cool for a while before resuming.
Just lost a 256 GB SD card filled to the brim with Deck games/roms to that. :suicide-blob:

I have not. Will try it later today.
But as I said the game has a native linux version that shows the same symptoms, so it might just be doing something weird that doesn't gel with the Decks hardware/drivers in some way.
But would be neat if it works!

What do the commands do, in very broad terms ? Just curious to learn a bit today.
Broadly speaking, Proton (ultimately WINE) needs to implement all the Windows synchronization mechanisms (i.e. functions to communicate/synchronize between multiple threads). "Esync" and "Fsync" are two methods for doing so which are generally faster than the default, but in rare cases might be less stable. Those two commands disable these methods.

I got my email today. Was stuck in the UK queue even though I'm not UK, was tough watching it move so slowly. But my wait to make an order is over, now I have to wait for the shipping to arrive.

I did laugh at the you will receive 70 Trading cards for this purchase.

So it seems to perform better with this HOWEVER I have not played long enough to see if the random freezes occur (and well, they're random). Gotta give it more time over the weekend.
