Not even 10 minutes in the Arch side of Steam Deck, just a black screen while I can still move the mouse cursor.
What did I expect...

Fuck that shit. I'm tired of wasting my time on this fucking linux side.

One of the most exciting changes is to shader compiling. Unless games already have their shaders ready, like you see in Steam when it downloads them for you, there will often be a lot of stuttering as the game builds it up with DXVK as you play. That's now changed! If you have drivers that support what's needed, the "shaders will now be compiled at the time the game loads its D3D shaders, rather than at draw time" resulting in reduced or eliminated shader compile stutter. There's some caveats with this though like some games only loading their shaders as you play anyway, 32-bit games may stutter and NVIDIA uses more space.

I think what you're seeing is the reason Valve hasn't released SteamOS 3.0 yet

I really wish Valve would add some sort of "community steam deck" rating to game pages.
There's a ton of stuff still labeled as "not working" that works now or is at least playable with very minor issues.

Since Valve can't realistically update all of the ratings themselves, would be a nice way to have it all in one place instead of always having to go
"Game Name Steam Deck" in google or the community forums

What I want the most is steam deck settings community profiles. I would love to just be able to download a "45 FPS" profile and just go. But sadly don't think that's ever going to be possible, since every game handles settings like that differently.
SteamDeckHQ does a great job with recommended settings for a bunch of recent games. But yeah, it would be great if we could download them similar to the controller profiles .

Close to wrapping up the story of HITMAN 3 on the Deck, so I decided to try out a few other games just to see how they ran.

PGA Tour 2k21
I initially thought it was a bit hard to control the swing, due to how you hold the Deck slightly different compared to how you hold a controller, but after performing the swing calibration, I felt I had decent control over the swing. Seemed to run perfectly on the Deck otherwise, you just have to keep in mind that your player and PGA career are not synced to Steam Cloud, so you need to transfer the files manually.
I need to return to this.

My Time at Portia
This game seems made for the Deck! IMO it works flawlessly and it seems really suited to play on the Deck.

Rebel Galaxy
Besides an initial settings launcher you have to navigate with the touch screen, and some small text here and there, this also seems to work really great! Maybe finally I'll have the time to try this game out!

So, for games that use any kind of external launcher, say Rockstar, EA or Ubisoft games, is the launcher installed into the Proton environment per game, or is it installed into SteamOS proper?

It's installed in each game's proton environment.

This weekend I found out that when docked the resolution can be changed per game by going to the game's properties. Not limited to 800p anymore!

I will be on a 10 day trip in Finland with many long train rides. Looking forward to all the deck gaming I have ahead of me! Will be interesting to see how well it will work on the road like that. Trying to only stick to 2D games for battery life and those probably work well in offline mode
Will you have Internet in Finland ?
And , while I have no idea about the process, just remember to set up your deck for offline mode beforehand.

So I will the deck a lot on trains and planes, so naturally I will want the battery to last as long as possible. But I have never really fiddled with the settings for battery life, what does have the biggest effect but doesn't affect the gameplay the most? I will be mostly playing 2D games so I guess I could turn down quite a bit for CPU and GPU and such?

I would suggest that you start with the TDP setting, for 2D games you could go as low as 6-7W.

Starting a week or so ago the low battery indicator, the yellow rectangle that shows up in the lower right corner at <10% or <5% charge, started occupying 95% of the screen, leaving only a few milimeters of game screen on the left. Has this happened to anyone else in here?

No, and I’m pretty certain it happened to me this week.

Yeah I’ll probably have occasional internet , so will set it in offline mode before I leave France. It’s in one week so have time to prepare.:)
Finnish trains have free wifi, but the connectivity is spotty and downloading large files does not work very well. If you want a cheap 4G, just get a 5e prepaid sim card which should give you 5 days unlimited data. The train seats also have power plug so you can charge your Deck at the same time.

I do have 25gb of data on my French plan so that is something. But sounds really good about power on the trains! I won't have to worry about that.

Is Decky a must have ? What are the things that you do with it people ?
I just saw it now has a SteamGridDB plugin and my interest is through the roof.

I haven’t bothered to install Decky yet. It uses the same HTTP port as Syncthing and I don’t want to spend the time messing with and (potentially) breaking that to get Decky working.

Yes, it's a must have.
Vibrant Deck for better looking screen
Power Tools for better control over power draw.
SteamlessTimes to track playtime for your non-Steam games.

My deck arrived, haven't done anything yet other than installing games and proton ge, not sure if i should opt into beta steam client and steamOS.

Gotta deal with where I put the thing, the power cable for charging is short so I only have a few spots on my desk to put it near the power outlet, I'm putting it on the case so I can just close it to avoid dust when I'm not using it, but that thing is gigantic.
