My deck arrived, haven't done anything yet other than installing games and proton ge, not sure if i should opt into beta steam client and steamOS.

Gotta deal with where I put the thing, the power cable for charging is short so I only have a few spots on my desk to put it near the power outlet, I'm putting it on the case so I can just close it to avoid dust when I'm not using it, but that thing is gigantic.
Huh, the USB cable that came with mine is one of the longest ones I've ever owned. But, you can use any USB-C cable (and technically any charger / plug but the one it comes with is best I've found so far).

I've also installed the decky loader thing.

I think normally it'd be okay if it's something I put against the wall like a ps5 near a tv, but troublesome with a higher computer desk that's like half the size of my room lol, it's mostly because my power outlet is also in the corner of the room so either I need a long cable or I put it in the corner where the power outlet is.

Trying KDE Connect to put the GamesPlanet version of The Sinking City on the Deck. Because fuck this flaming pile of shit Winpinator.
...
KDE Connect doesn't allow me to send a folder or select multiple files at once. It even semi froze the Deck when I queued too many files.

I swear anything outside Steam is a humongous PITA.

yeah Winpinator or whatever works fine for me, but I haven't tried transferring large files.

Speaking of that I thought Linux uses SMB or whatever so I'm surprised I need 3rd party softwares to transfer files, I thought I could just browse a windows share.

I set up Emudeck, hardest part was knowing that the Bios file doesn't need a directory, but now I'm gonna be distracted playing God Hand, man it looks SHARP on the deck, good stuff.

I think you can just unzip everything into the same directory as the rs2.exe and set WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command% as your launch option.

Don't have the game so I can't test but I did something similar for Eiyuden Chronicle Rising.
Nice, It worked.

Interesting, I just put files in my NAS and navigate to there from the explorer.

My issue with warpi winpi is that they don’t detect their counterpart most of the time. Basically each transfer must be preceded by a super tedious seance of relaunching each app until they see themselves.
I have winpi in admin mode.
I selected the connexion type because auto is buggy for some.

But no, I must launch winpi, then 1-2 seconds later launch warpi, and pray. Each. Time.

I wonder how I should go to play ubi connect games on the deck ? And how many brain ells I will lose.

Last fun time : I have set the deck to French keyboard.
My keyboard still type in Qwerty :grimacing-face:

But still, I’m serious about ubi connect, any help appreciated. I mean my other option is to re purchase the games on steam and I don’t shit that kind of money.

Can you even re-buy Ubi games on Steam that you already own on UPlay? Or do you have to link a new Ubi account for that?
And of course you can on Steam, but will the account linking accept it?

Easiest way is to install Lutris (available in Discover) and use Ubisoft Connect for the install script. Or use Bottles.

I should check to make sure but thinking about it I’m pretty sure I have some games in double in my ubi account. But yeah, have to check.

New deck shenanigan : did a CTRL+C in heroic game launcher to remember a filepath.
Deck crash, reboot and verify install :face-with-cold-sweat:

Sometimes I wonder about my unit, but afaik it never crossed my imaginary line between fuck the deck UX and faulty unit. I guess it was its way to say happy christmas.

As Pertti said, ubisoft games you buy on steam will have their own entry in uplay if you already bought it there before.

Regarding smb: linux uses samba, the open source implementation of smb - but for reasons i forgot, this functionality is inaccessible on SteamOS, which is why you'd need these other programs for fileshare
Don't quote me on this though ;)

I spend this thread complaining about the Deck.
First thought of the day : I need a bigger Deck.

Changing the SSD is not trivial, but it’s not difficult either. Plenty of guides are online to help.
Hold it, I will settle with a 512 !
I would loveeeee to custom ssd my Deck, but I don't think I have the skill to get it back to integrity after dismantling it.

Surely Deck helped with my ability to cope with my hobby. Without it I probably wouldn't have cutted my total playtime by half (Because I've a laptop that comes with me when i travel) but it would have been at least half of that 44%.
So yeah, thanks to it I'm just playing more without sacrificing anything.

Hmm, to buy a 512 sdxc or not to buy. I'm scared by the so called poor performances, and the price could pay for several games, but on the other hand it's not like I can get by with my 256 main ssd. I mean, ok, I could but...

where did you hear about poor performance? Ive only ever heard about SD cards performing well, and so far games I've played off mine have performed remarkably well, as well.

Here and there. But here for example. Pretty sure some have talked about how playing from the SD was subpar in some technical way, not only loading.
But you telling me you have a great experience is super appreciated feedback.

Toying with the idea of resetting my Deck to have a clean install. But that only ocd and because I 'only' have 177 / 256 go free with the only notable install FF7 vanilla and Norco. There is a lost of compatdata for example.

Today I experienced the more troublesome parts of the Steam deck.

First, I attempted to play Partisans 1941 which is listed as playable but with small text and some inputs missing.

The game crashed if you accessed the pause menu during the first in engine cutscene... But if didn't do that, it worked fine.

But the controls were... not great. Even after adjusting the sensitivity, it just didn't feel very good to control such a mouse heavy and (relatively) fast (as in reaction time) game with the Deck.

So, I started Wasteland 2 Director's Cut instead... Also listed as playable, but with some missing inputs.
The game starts, and only touch controls are available in the menu and during character creation, making the process frustrating to say the least.

I think I need to run the character creation on my PC before attempting to play the game again on the Deck.

So, instead of those games, I just booted up Yakuza Kiwami 2 instead... 😁

Tried Death Stranding on Deck, and contrary to some shots I saw, it’s not ugly at all. Fps fluctuate a little too much between 25 and 40 but I should have locked the game to 30.

But yeah, as usual, power hungry game invokes fan noise. I wish I had the magic foam valve applies on newer decks.

I… uh… still don’t know if I should buy a 512 sd or games. The struggle.
On the one hand, a big SD won’t change a thing to my love hate relationship with the deck. But on the other, and while I will readily acknowledge that size isn’t everything, my 256 main ssd fills very quickly if I install big games, and my 60 SD is anecdotal.

I just have the GOG version, but it works well on the deck. Just have to change the input method to Xbox in the game's options menu If you have or want a controller layout, or download one of the community layouts if you want to use keyboard&mouse.

Yeah, I know. It just felt so stupid from a dev standpoint that the entire character generation had no specific controls assigned, making the process so incredibly fiddly.

But it's an old game, so one shouldn't expect too much.

Been reading this conversation about how Steam deck isn't selling as much as console or whatever, how it's not mainstream and downplaying its success.

Some of these people are missing the point, people aren't fighting a console war, people are genuinely happy this weird device for tech enthusiasts are actually doing relatively good and people are generally happy such a thing exists and will continue to improve.

Like for example if a Linux distro spreading to more mainstream audience and the first take you have is "LMAO IT's STILL SHIT COMPARED TO WINDOWS" then yeah that's a super weird take and speaks more about your character more than anything.

Anyone was able to get Shin-chan to run at 1920x1080? It's the maximum res and I tried increasing it in the game property box, it sorta works but the game only let me choose 1920x800...

It looks nice enough at that res and got rid of most jaggies but could use higher pixel density to get rid of the rest. The game barely uses the gpu since it's mostly pre rendered backgrounds.

Did you set the game resolution to 1080p and check the box to use it for the internal display in the game's Steam properties?

FF7 Remake runs pretty good, I imagine they probably did more work on it, the slums run fine for the most part, just stuttering like loading when you run around through it fast, and there's 1 section with framerate drops to the 30s when you fight the ghost thingies, but that didn't really last long. At chapter 4 now.

Yeah I checked the box to use the resolution for both internal/external display, but the in-game options won't let me choose 1920 x 1080, only 1920 x 800 for some strange reason.

I beat the EGS version of FF VII Remake recently on Deck, so I did not have any cache built, but I switched to Dx11 and disabled dynamic resolution. Worked really well at 40 fps with high textures, low shadows and an 11 TDP limit IIRC. Some dips and stutters in slums, market, and a few slowdowns during heavier action, but otherwise a pleasant experience.
