Oh. Did they launch it half baked again?
You will be shocked to learn Civ Fans never like the state of any Civ at release.

Though it seems there are quite a few actionable reasons to not like this one. I dunno how many of them are because of the poor UI on PC, the general lack of polish, or changes from previous games. I have also seen several people saying they really like the new systems and find the game perfectly enjoyable. So who knows. Best to wait on the game for a bit it seems.

Civ VII feels different to other Civ releases.

They usually suck at the beginning for one reason or another, but they still feel like a Civ game. VII feels pretty soulless, like it’s missing something pretty core to what makes a Civ game great. Of course the UI sucks, but that feels like a lightning rod for people’s unhappiness. When they fix that - and they will - the game that’s there will still be a husk.

I don’t know if they can fix this one. I think we’re going to get VIII a lot quicker than we got VII.

I've played Civ for about 10 hours now. Not finished my first game yet so I can't speak about endgame issues but I do have some thoughts.

Whenever a new Civ launches, there's always some stuff that remains the same, some stuff that gets improved and then some new stuff added in. That means there's always a learning curve with every new entry. And obviously it cannot match the previous game which has 10 years of content and fixes.

The biggest issue with this new game is that the learning part is hard because the UI really sucks. Both from an aesthetic and functional point of view. The placement of UI elements and the choices they've just make it look like a placeholder. It feels unpolished and unfinished. The bigger issue is that it doesn't give you enough accurate information to make your decisions. You check the in-game Civopedia and it'll say "this unit on this tile gives you this resource" but it won't tell you how much of that resource it gives. It's just lacking in actual information which is making it hard to figure out some things.

There are some bugs which are already being fixed. Obviously if people are having crashes then that's an issue as well.

The other issue in my mind is that it's very obvious they cut out content to sell later. The game ends around 1950. No Civ game has ever ended there. They will add another time period from 1950 onwards but it will come in an expansion probably. The problem is, there are already references to that time period in the game right now. Then there's the dlc. I remember when it was first announced that leaders were not tied to civs, I thought it would be amusing to have Gandhi leading the British Empire. Well, neither Gandhi nor the British are in the game at launch. Britain is coming next month in the first round of dlc. It really does feel like stuff that has always been in the game has been cut it to sell back to you.

Despite these issues, the game still is fun to play. It's not like they shipped a bad game. It's unfinished but I don't think the core systems are bad. They'll fix the bugs, patch in missing features and polish up the game. The lacking content will be addressed with paid dlc, unfortunately. It's still fun to play though... I'm still learning stuff and getting stuck with certain things and other things you learn from experience while playing... but I'm enjoying it.

I think the mixed reviews are deserved but I do think the word of mouth is painting a much worse picture than the reality of the situation. It's getting a bit out of hand actually. The VR version of the got announced the other day and I've seen people lashing out because apparently it's very existence is proof that the developers don't care about the pc version. Things like that. I think the discourse around this game might become very ugly.

  • consolified
  • UI atrocious
  • max map size normal
  • max MP size 5 in the first 2 ages, 8 only if you start in the last age
  • last age only goes to 1950 and has a hard end, cant play after that
  • English civilization clearly held back for a DLC release (england was always in civ and London was used as an example for why they used the civ-age system and the economic victory screen depicts London
  • there is a hard end to every age and you start with a new civilization in the next age (only the personality you picked will be constant)
  • look at this AI atrocity that is the economic victory screen:

Civilization II was great on the original PlayStation (and the only in the series I ever invested in). I thought the IV "ports" (Revolution) were considered okay too.

Weird they dropped the ball. They totally missed that ages now "PC" games like even turn based CRPGs do just fine on console if they're good ports/games.

Edit: the first game had SNES, PlayStation & Saturn ports, but only the first released worldwide... They look better than the PC version, the latter more like II..!

One of the best demos from the fest for me and it's finally out!

I love games like this lol, I've recently been playing Showbiz Tycoon which is just a text game but lets you make your own movies
Is this like The Movies?

I really can't think of what Sony is gonna show for 40 minutes tomorrow.

Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei together would be 15 minutes at most. Unless Kojima really prepped some long trailer but I doubt it since he already showed so much.

that would leave 25+ minutes for 3rd party games? maybe they also tease Wolverine again but that wouldn't be some long trailer either.

Expecting a lot of 3rd party trailers tomorrow. Maybe see some Xbox stuff in there.

The PC hailmary port would be an Astro Bot trailer. I feel like Sony could show it off briefly for a late summer release as we already know TLOU2 is in April. I can see a very soonish PC release to capitalize on the GOTY hype before it completely wears off. It would be the smart thing to do imo.

Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol 2 could be teased I guess. That would make for a quick trailer too tho. Same with Delta.

The real crazy predictions would be Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts stuff but I just can't see it yet lol.

So yea a lot of potential for the SoP tomorrow. I think there will be a lot of surprises.

Civ VII has a lackluster start.
just getting half of CIV VI's peak CCU at start and only getting a little bit over CIV VI's median monthly CCU

There is a common theme about sequels to long-running series' underperforming.

If you have to do a "marketing blitz" and need to explain on WHY the new mechanics/direction/changes are actually good for the player... you have already lost the word of mouth war.
Your gameplay should speak for itself and players should be giddy for the new systems within the game without the developers needing to convince customers.

They got greedy and thought a £120 edition would net them some extra cash.

Just gave some folk an opportunity to cancel their pre-order as the early impressions flooded in.

This one won’t stand the test of time.

20 minutes of Marathon, 20 minutes of Fairgame$
I keep forgetting about Marathon.

And Bungie has done fuck all for a while now. I believe Destiny is finished.

So yea probably a good time for a gameplay blowout and maybe a beta announcement. It would make sense.

They are gonna have to knock it out of the park too after Concord. I would be surprised if Marathon isn't F2P.

The upcoming State of Play should be interesting. God of War Greek remastered rumor is circling around. Ghost of Yotei new trailer. Resident Evil 9 might show up. SQEX and other Japanese publishers may have something to show.

Look forward to it. :coffee-blob:

Think I’m going to give up on rebirth, I’m literally at the last stage of the last fight at the last sliver of boss health, but it was a one hit team wipe attack that’s just too bullshit. Tried a few times and I know what to do but slogging through the whole fight to fail at the last minute more than once is just too much for me.

edit: ok beat that mf! Fuck yeah dammit

Disappointing to who?

People who want AAA first party Sony games?

Fanboys?

A showcase of games can have something exciting, even if the insiders say it won’t be. They have an audience of thirsty fans, desperate for console war level news and will cater to that sort.
